Binance Coin (BNB) tokenomics

BNB (Build and Build) is the native utility token of the BNB Chain ecosystem, which includes the BNB Smart Chain (BSC), opBNB, and BNB Greenfield. Originally launched as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum in 2017, it has since migrated to become the central asset for gas fees, staking, and governance across its native networks.

Issuance Mechanism

BNB was launched with an initial maximum supply of 200,000,000 tokens. Unlike many other blockchains, BNB does not have a mining or inflationary issuance mechanism to reward validators. Instead, the supply is strictly deflationary, with a long-term goal of reducing the total supply to 100,000,000 BNB (50% of the initial supply).

As of December 18, 2024, the total supply has been reduced to approximately 150,540,000 BNB. This reduction is achieved through three primary burn mechanisms:

• Auto-Burn: A quarterly mechanism that automatically adjusts the amount of BNB to be burned based on the token's price and the number of blocks generated on the BNB Smart Chain during that quarter. This process is independent of the Binance centralized exchange.
• Real-Time Burn (BEP-95): Introduced to make the tokenomics more dynamic, this mechanism burns a fixed ratio of the gas fees collected by validators in every block.
• Pioneer Burn Program: This program assists users who have lost tokens due to honest mistakes by counting those lost tokens toward the quarterly burn and reimbursing the users in specific cases.

Allocation Mechanism

The initial 200 million BNB tokens were distributed among three primary groups during the Genesis period and the Initial Coin Offering (ICO) held in July 2017.

The funds raised during the public sale were further allocated for specific operational purposes:

• Binance Operations: 50% of the raised funds.
• Marketing and Branding: 35% of the raised funds.
• Emergency Fund: 15% of the raised funds.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

BNB serves as the "lifeblood" of the ecosystem with extensive utility across both the decentralized BNB Chain and the Binance exchange:

Network Utility

• Gas Fees: BNB is used to pay for transaction fees and smart contract deployments on BNB Smart Chain, opBNB, and BNB Greenfield.
• Staking and Governance: Tokenholders use BNB to participate in the network's Proof-of-Staked Authority (PoSA) consensus. It also serves as a governance token for proposing and voting on network changes.
• Data Storage: On BNB Greenfield, BNB is the native token for data ownership, usage, and monetization.

Exchange and Ecosystem Incentives

• Fee Discounts: Users on the Binance exchange receive a 25% discount on spot trading fees and a 10% discount on futures trading fees when paying with BNB.
• Launchpad and Launchpool: BNB is required to participate in new token sales and to farm new project tokens.
• Binance Earn: Users can deposit BNB into various products like Simple Earn, BNB Vault, and Locked Products to earn APR and additional airdrops (such as HODLer Airdrops and Megadrops).

Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Time

The locking and unlocking of BNB tokens vary depending on the participant's role and the specific product used.

Initial Allocation Unlocks

The original distribution followed a structured vesting schedule to ensure long-term alignment:

• ICO Investors: Received their full allocation within 5 working days after the ICO finished (July 2017).
• Angel Investors: Received their tokens instantly at the time of the initial distribution.
• Founding Team: Subject to a 4-year vesting period. 20% (16 million BNB) was unlocked at genesis, followed by 20% annual unlocks for the subsequent four years.

Staking and Earn Locking

• Validator Staking: To become a validator candidate, a user must self-stake a minimum of 2,000 BNB. If a delegator chooses to unstake their BNB from a validator, they are subject to a 7-day unbonding period.
• Simple Earn Locked Products: Users can choose to lock BNB for set durations of 15, 30, 60, 90, or 120 days. The APR increases with the length of the lock, ranging from approximately 0.05% to 0.5%.
• Binance Launchpool: Tokens are locked for the duration of the farming event (often 30 days), though users can typically claim accrued rewards at any time.
