SUI (SUI) Tokenomics

Sui is a Layer-1 blockchain that utilizes a Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) consensus mechanism. Its native token, SUI, is central to the network's operations, serving as the primary medium for transaction fees, staking, and future governance.

Issuance Mechanism

The SUI token has a strictly capped maximum supply of 10,000,000,000 (10 billion) tokens. At the time of the Mainnet launch on May 3, 2023, approximately 5% of the total supply was in circulation. The remaining tokens are released according to a long-term schedule designed to maintain network stability.

The network employs an inflationary mechanism for the first year of its life to provide reward subsidies. These subsidies are drawn from a pool of 1 billion SUI, which represents 10% of the maximum token supply. Over time, annualized inflation has shown a significant downward trend, decreasing from 4.9% in Q3 2023 to near 0.0% by Q3 2024.

Allocation Mechanism

The initial allocation of SUI tokens was structured to prioritize ecosystem growth and reward early contributors. The distribution is broken down as follows:

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

The SUI token serves four primary functions within the ecosystem:

• Gas Fees: All transactions incur fees for computation and storage. Computation fees are distributed to validators, while storage fees are sent to the Storage Fund.
• Staking: Token holders can stake SUI to validators to secure the network. Validators must stake at least 30 million SUI to operate.
• Governance: While no active on-chain governance process was in place as of early 2024, the SUI token is intended to provide voting power for future protocol upgrades.
• Medium of Exchange: SUI provides on-chain liquidity and is used for trading, borrowing, and lending within the DeFi ecosystem.

Incentives:

• Validators: Earn rewards from computation fees, storage fund rewards, and temporary reward subsidies.
• Delegators: Share in the computation fees and subsidies earned by the validators they stake with, minus a commission fee.
• Storage Fund: This fund rewards future validators for storing data created by past transactions, ensuring long-term sustainability.

Locking and Unlocking Mechanism

Sui utilizes a phased vesting schedule that extends beyond 2030. Tokens are generally locked for specific durations (epochs) when staked, and larger allocations for investors and the team are subject to multi-year vesting.

Unlocking Time and Events:

• Public Sale Tokens: Tokens purchased through programs like KuCoin Spotlight or OKX Jumpstart often had a 12-month distribution schedule, with one-third unlocked at launch and the remainder released monthly.
• Major 2024 Unlocks: A significant event occurred in Q2 2024, where 1.4 billion SUI (representing over 50% of the then-circulating supply) was unlocked for private investors.
• Future Projections: Unlocks continue gradually. For example, in Q3 2025, approximately 172 million SUI (1.72% of total supply) is scheduled for release.

The large unlock scheduled for May 2030 represents a significant portion of the total supply, though ecosystem tokens held by the Sui Foundation may not be immediately distributed to the market upon becoming liquid.
