US CPI Rises to 3.7% as October Rate-Hike Risk Returns

US inflation accelerated in September 2026, weakening the case for a straightforward Federal Reserve pause in October. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Consumer Price Index rose 0.6% month over month and 3.7% year over year.

The monthly increase matched April’s reading and was the strongest in five months. Annual inflation accelerated from 3.4% in August and exceeded the approximately 3.6% market forecast.

More importantly for interest-rate expectations, core CPI increased 0.3% during September and 2.6% over the previous 12 months. Both readings were 0.1 percentage point above economists’ forecasts.

Energy Explains Much of the Headline—but Not the Entire Surprise

Gasoline was the largest contributor to September’s inflation increase. Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed that the gasoline index rose 9.1% month over month and accounted for more than half of the overall CPI increase. The broader energy index gained 5.2% in September and 20.4% year over year.

This distinction matters because energy inflation can reverse relatively quickly if supply conditions improve. The Fed may therefore be reluctant to respond aggressively to gasoline prices alone.

The core data make the report harder to dismiss. Shelter increased 0.4% during the month, while services excluding energy rose 0.4%. Recreation, education, airline fares, used vehicles, apparel and medical care also recorded increases.

The data show that inflation was not confined to one volatile category. They do not prove that every increase will persist. October data will be needed to determine whether September marked a broader inflation trend or a temporary combination of energy and service-price pressure.

October Rate-Hike Odds Rose From 22% to Around 45%

Before the CPI release, interest-rate futures implied roughly a 22% probability that the Fed would raise rates at its October 27–28 meeting.

According to Reuters, the implied probability increased to approximately 45% following the inflation report. The repricing was substantial, but it still left the market almost evenly divided between another increase and no change.

Fed officials must now balance two competing risks. Raising rates could help prevent elevated inflation from becoming more persistent, but tightening too quickly could place additional pressure on employment and consumer demand.

The CPI report therefore changed October from a likely pause into a genuinely uncertain policy decision. Treasury yields, the US dollar and upcoming Fed comments will show whether markets continue moving toward another increase.

BTC and ETH Declined as Financial Conditions Tightened

Higher expected interest rates can pressure crypto prices by lifting bond yields, supporting the dollar and reducing demand for leveraged risk exposure.

MEXC market data showed the Bitcoin price on MEXC near $81,875 as of October 14, 2026, at 22:46 UTC+8. BTC was down 1.92% over the preceding 24 hours and had traded between approximately $81,805 and $84,112 during that period.

The Ethereum price on MEXC was approximately $2,419 as of October 14 at 22:42 UTC+8, down 3.72% over 24 hours. Its corresponding 24-hour range was approximately $2,418 to $2,529.

These declines occurred in the same trading window as the CPI surprise and the increase in rate-hike expectations. The timing is consistent with a tighter-liquidity reaction, but it does not prove that CPI was the sole cause. Position reductions, derivatives liquidations and asset-specific flows may also have contributed.

ETH’s larger decline suggests that traders reduced exposure more aggressively in higher-beta assets. If that pattern continues, smaller altcoins could remain more sensitive than BTC to further increases in yields or the dollar.

MEXC View: Core Services Matter More Than the 3.7% Headline

MEXC’s view is that the September report contains two different inflation signals.

The headline figure was heavily influenced by gasoline, meaning part of the increase could reverse if energy-market conditions normalize. The core reading is more difficult to dismiss because shelter and several service categories increased at the same time.

For crypto traders, the clearest confirmation will come from Treasury yields and the US dollar rather than the CPI headline alone. If both continue rising while October hike odds move decisively above 50%, the restrictive-policy narrative would gain credibility and crypto could remain under pressure.

If energy prices stabilize, yields retreat and Fed officials emphasize labor-market weakness, markets may decide that September CPI was insufficient to justify another immediate rate increase. In that scenario, the initial risk-off reaction could moderate before the October meeting.

What Traders Should Watch Next

The first variable is the composition of inflation. Falling gasoline prices would reduce headline CPI, but persistent shelter and service inflation would keep the Fed focused on underlying price pressure.

The second is the bond market. Rising Treasury yields would tighten financial conditions even without an October rate increase, while falling yields would indicate that investors expect the energy shock to fade.

The third is market positioning. With the rate decision now closer to a coin flip, new economic data or Fed comments could quickly change expectations and trigger volatility across BTC, ETH and higher-risk altcoins.

FAQ

Why did September CPI rise to 3.7%?

Gasoline prices rose 9.1% during the month and accounted for more than half of the headline CPI increase. Shelter and several service categories also became more expensive.

Did core CPI exceed expectations?

Yes. Core CPI increased 0.3% month over month and 2.6% year over year, compared with forecasts of approximately 0.2% and 2.5%, respectively.

Will the Fed raise rates in October?

The decision remains uncertain. The market-implied probability increased from approximately 22% to 45% after the CPI release, according to Reuters, but a rate increase was not yet the majority expectation at the time of reporting.

Does higher inflation help or hurt Bitcoin?

The effect depends on the timeframe. Inflation concerns may support Bitcoin’s long-term scarcity narrative, but the immediate impact can be negative when higher CPI produces tighter monetary-policy expectations, rising yields and a stronger dollar.

Risk Warning

CPI data, interest-rate probabilities and crypto prices can change rapidly. Market-implied probabilities are not Federal Reserve commitments. BTC and ETH may respond to liquidity, positioning and asset-specific developments in addition to macroeconomic data, while leveraged positions face heightened liquidation risk around policy events.
