Injective (INJ) tokenomics

The Injective (INJ) token is the native utility and governance asset of the Injective network, a Layer-1 blockchain optimized for decentralized finance (DeFi). The tokenomics model is designed to balance network security, ecosystem growth, and scarcity through a combination of inflationary rewards and deflationary burn mechanisms.

Issuance Mechanism

Injective utilizes a dynamic issuance model that balances the creation of new tokens with a robust burn mechanism.

• Initial Supply and Soft Cap: The protocol launched with an initial total supply of 100,000,000 INJ tokens. While this is often referred to as a "soft cap," the actual supply fluctuates based on minting (inflation) and burning (deflation).
• Inflationary Minting: As a Delegated Proof-of-Stake (DPoS) network, Injective mints new tokens to reward validators and stakers. The inflation rate was initially set at 7% at genesis. This rate is dynamic, ranging between a floor of 5% and a ceiling of 10%, adjusted to target a specific staking ratio (85%).
• Deflationary Burning: Injective employs a unique "Buy Back and Burn" auction. Originally, 60% of all fees collected from exchange dApps were auctioned weekly and subsequently burned. With the INJ 2.0 upgrade, any dApp on the network can now contribute up to 100% of its fees to this burn auction, significantly increasing the deflationary pressure on the token supply.

Allocation Mechanism

The initial distribution of the 100 million INJ tokens was divided among several key stakeholders and ecosystem initiatives to ensure long-term sustainability.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

The INJ token serves multiple critical functions within the ecosystem, providing utility for users, developers, and validators.

• Protocol Governance: INJ holders can participate in on-chain governance by proposing and voting on protocol parameters, including community pool spends, exchange module updates, and new asset listings. A deposit of 500 INJ is required to initiate a proposal.
• Staking and Network Security: Users can stake INJ to secure the network. Validators (capped at 60 active slots) and their delegators earn inflationary rewards and a portion of transaction fees.
• Gas Fees: Native INJ is used to pay for transaction gas fees on the network.
• Exchange Incentives:
  • Trade & Earn: A program designed to reward traders with INJ for participating in incentivized trading pairs.
  • Open Liquidity Program (OLP): Incentivizes liquidity providers on the Injective order book with rewards from the community pool.
  • Fee Discounts: Users who stake INJ are eligible for tiered trading fee discounts on exchange dApps like Helix.
• Collateral for Derivatives: INJ can be used as margin or collateral for derivative trading pairs where it serves as the quote asset.
• Developer Incentives: Applications built on Injective receive 40% of the exchange fees they generate, encouraging builders to launch new products on the platform.

Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Time

Injective implements specific locking periods and vesting schedules to align the interests of the team and early investors with the long-term health of the protocol.

• Staking Unbonding Period: To ensure network stability, there is a mandatory 21-day unbonding period for any INJ tokens that are unstaked or undelegated from an active validator.
• Vesting Schedules: Initial allocations for the team and advisors were subject to vesting, with the final portions of these allocations scheduled to be fully vested by January 2024.
• Historical Unlock Events: Data shows a series of significant unlock events where millions of tokens were released into the circulating supply. For example, on January 20, 2024, approximately 3,666,666 INJ were unlocked, representing roughly 4.33% of the circulating supply at that time. Similar periodic unlocks occurred throughout 2022 and 2023, typically ranging between 2.8 million and 4.8 million tokens per event.
