Litecoin (LTC) is designed as a peer-to-peer digital currency, sharing many fundamental token economic principles with Bitcoin, such as a fixed supply and a deflationary issuance schedule governed by halving events. The native token, LTC, has a maximum supply of 84.00 million. As of June 7, 2024, approximately 74.61 million LTC, or about 88.83% of the maximum supply, were in circulation.

Issuance Mechanism

Litecoin's issuance mechanism is predictable and controlled by the network's consensus rules, ensuring a fixed and decreasing rate of new token creation over time.

• Maximum Supply: The total number of LTC that will ever be produced is capped at 84.00 million.
• Block Production: The network targets a block interval of 2.5 minutes.
• Block Reward Halving: The issuance rate is controlled by a halving mechanism. A halving event occurs approximately every four years, or every 840,000 blocks, reducing the block reward by half.
• Current and Future Rewards: Initially, miners were rewarded 50.00 LTC per block. The last halving occurred on August 2, 2023, reducing the reward to 6.25 LTC per block.
• Next Halving: The next halving event is expected to occur in July 2027 at block 3.36 million, at which point the block reward will be reduced to 3.125 LTC per block.
• Final Issuance: The block reward will continue to halve until it reaches zero, which is expected to occur around the year 2142, at which point the maximum supply will be fully mined.

This deflationary design is intended to make LTC scarcer over time, potentially serving as a hedge against inflation.

Allocation Mechanism

Litecoin's token allocation is primarily determined by its Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, meaning tokens are distributed to miners who secure the network. Unlike many newer protocols, Litecoin did not have a pre-mine, ICO, or formal token allocation schedule for founders, investors, or a treasury at launch.

• Distribution Method: LTC is distributed exclusively through mining as a block reward.
• Asset Concentration: While the allocation mechanism is decentralized, there is notable concentration among wallet addresses. As of June 7, 2024, the top 10 wallet addresses collectively hold approximately 11.36 million LTC, representing about 15.22% of the circulating supply. Three of these addresses individually hold over 1.50% of the circulating supply.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

The LTC token serves as the native utility token for the Litecoin network, primarily functioning as a medium of exchange and a store of value.

• Primary Use Cases:
  • Peer-to-Peer Payments and Value Storage: LTC enables users to send and receive funds without intermediaries.
  • Settling Network Transaction Fees: Users include a fee (paid in LTC) with transactions to incentivize miners to process and confirm the transaction. Fees are based on the transaction's size in bytes, and users can adjust the fee to influence confirmation priority.
• Incentive Mechanism (Rewarding Miners):
  • Miners are incentivized to secure the network through the Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, utilizing the Scrypt hashing algorithm.
  • Miners who successfully generate a block receive two forms of compensation: (i) newly minted LTC via the inflationary block reward (currently 6.25 LTC per block) and (ii) all transaction fees included in that block.
  • Miners can participate in mining pools to share profits proportional to their contributed hash power. As of June 7, 2024, the top 10 mining pools control nearly 100% of the network's total hashrate, indicating a high degree of mining centralization among pools.
• Staking/Liquidity: Litecoin does not employ a staking or liquidity provision mechanism for consensus or rewards.

Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Time

Litecoin, as a Proof-of-Work cryptocurrency, does not utilize a formal token locking or vesting mechanism for its native token, LTC, in the way that many newer Proof-of-Stake or pre-mined tokens do.

• No Formal Locking: There is no native staking, vesting, or locking mechanism required for token holders to participate in network consensus or governance.
• Token Unlocks: Since LTC is continuously issued through block rewards, there are no large, scheduled "unlock events" typical of tokens with pre-allocated supplies and vesting schedules. The issuance is a constant, predictable flow determined by the block reward and the halving schedule.
