Threads, Meta’s text-based social media platform, has now reached 500 million monthly active users. This comes almost three years after the platform was launched as a close alternative to Elon Musk-owned X (formerly Twitter).

In an announcement on Tuesday, Meta noted that the milestone is part of a broader commitment to build what really matters to internet users globally. The company added that Threads has improved over time based on feedback received from users.

This growth is driven by community groups of people showing up around the conversations they care about, from books to basketball to parenting to music.”

“Those communities built Threads into what it is, and now, we’re adding new tools to help them become even more meaningful and dynamic,” Meta said in the statement.

The milestone comes eight months after the platform announced reaching 150 million monthly users in October 2025. While providing more context to the growth, Meta said more people are now opening Threads directly over time.

Meta also shared that more adoptions are spotted in Asia, particularly South Korea and Japan, where time spent is up 80% and 130%, respectively, compared with last year.

Meta introduces new features on Threads

To credit its latest milestone, Meta announced new customisation and community features on the platform.

The company is introducing “Your Algo,” a feature that allows users to privately control what conversations they see in feeds. The new feature complements the “Dear Algo”, a feature released in early January that lets users tell the Threads algorithm what they want to see more or less of.

What “Your Algo” does on Threads is to let users see more or less of certain topics and choose how long the request lasts, be it one, three, or seven days.

“Only you will be able to see your requests, and you can manage both Dear Algo and Your Algo in one unified hub,” Meta said.

The company noted that the latest feature is the start of a new set of rollouts. And that future updates on Threads will be based on user feedback to make sure the platform encourages user adoption.

Meta noted that the new feature starts rolling out today in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Also, the company said the recently announced “live chats” feature is expected to expand to all users by July.
