THORChain’s token economics are centered around its native utility token, RUNE, which serves as the primary vehicle for liquidity, security, governance, and incentives within the network. The protocol uses a unique "Incentive Pendulum" to maintain a balance between the capital bonded by nodes and the capital provided by liquidity providers.

Issuance and Allocation Mechanism

The total supply of RUNE was originally targeted at 500,000,000 tokens. The distribution was designed to bootstrap the network while ensuring long-term sustainability through community incentives.

Issuance Mechanism

RUNE is issued through Emission Rewards generated by the network's block reward mechanism. These emissions are distributed to both node operators (bonders) and liquidity providers. The rate of issuance is calibrated by the Incentive Pendulum algorithm to drive optimal participation.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

RUNE has four primary functions that drive its value and utility:

• Liquidity: RUNE is the settlement asset for all pools. It must be staked in a 50:50 ratio with external assets (e.g., BTC, ETH). This ensures that the network can facilitate swaps efficiently without a centralized intermediary.
• Security: THORNodes must bond RUNE to participate in consensus. This "Proof of Bond" system ensures Sybil resistance. If a node misbehaves or steals assets, its bond is slashed by 1.5 times the value of the compromised assets.
• Governance: RUNE allows participants to engage in "minimalistic" governance. Node operators vote on network parameters (Node Mimir), while liquidity providers influence asset listing priorities by staking RUNE in specific pools.
• Incentives: The Incentive Pendulum dynamically allocates system income (block rewards and swap fees). In an "Optimal State," 67% of rewards go to Node Operators and 33% go to Liquidity Providers.

Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Time

THORChain employs several locking and vesting mechanisms to secure the network and align long-term interests:

• Node Bonding: To qualify as a validator, a node must bond a significant amount of RUNE. As of early 2024, the minimum bond requirement was approximately 538,600 RUNE, with a median bond of roughly 953,200 RUNE.
• Liquidity Locking: While liquidity provision is generally permissionless, the protocol provides Impermanent Loss Protection (ILP). This protection increases linearly over 100 days, incentivizing providers to keep their assets in the pools for at least that duration to receive full coverage.
• Vesting Schedules:
  • Team/Advisors: The 50 million RUNE allocated to the team and advisors was reported as fully vested as of February 14, 2024.
  • Seed Investors: Tokens allocated to seed investors (26 million RUNE) were scheduled to vest over the four months following THORChain’s mainnet launch.
• Exit Mechanisms: In extreme cases, the protocol includes a Ragnarök mechanism. This is a controlled shutdown process triggered if the number of active nodes falls below four, at which point all locked funds are paid out to users.
