The hallmark of the 21st century has been the rapid innovation since the turn of the century. This ties into another major factor. Not only is the US power grid old and battered, but it is also subject to an uptick in power consumption. Because the strain on these old transformers and power lines is only getting higher, certain parts of the grid can get pushed too far and simply give out. As the future creeps forward, this problem is only set to intensify and cause more frequent outages across the country.

However, newer infrastructure has a chance to do much more than simply replace its outdated counterparts.
