MUAR, July 5 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on young people to reject divisive race-based politics and instead use the upcoming Johor state election to elect leaders committed to safeguarding their future.

Anwar, who is also Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman, said young voters should make their choice based on a leader’s ability to address issues that directly affect people’s lives, such as education, employment opportunities and the state’s development, rather than being swayed by racial sentiments.

“But some people keep trying to stir up fear of the Chinese, resentment towards the Indians, and provoke conflict between Malays and Chinese. What’s the point? While ordinary people are fighting among themselves, those at the top are busy enriching themselves.

“I want to say this to the many young Malays here, as well as the Chinese and Indian youths. It’s time for us to decide. Who? You decide. Stand up and secure our future. Don’t be deceived by the rotten political system in our country,” he said when launching the Bukit Naning state constituency volunteer programme here today.

Also present were PH candidate for the Simpang Jeram state seat Nazri Abd Rahman and PH candidate for the Bukit Naning state seat Md Ysahrudin Kusni.

The Prime Minister also expressed admiration for the overwhelming turnout of young people at the programme, saying it reflected the younger generation’s growing determination to bring about change.

“I am heartened by this spirit. I have been campaigning for more than 10 years, but today is truly extraordinary. We are making history. It reflects the growing awareness among young people.

“So, I urge all of you to go to every village, neighbourhood and district to deliver a clear message that we are capable of bringing about change. We must do everything we can to realise this agenda for change. Make the best use of this opportunity,” he said.

The Johor state election has drawn 172 candidates contesting 56 state seats. Polling is scheduled for July 11, while early voting will be held this Tuesday (July 7).
