Ex-Trumper: His supporters are loyal to him like trained dogs

President Donald Trump’s supporters are loyal to him like dogs are loyal to their masters, a former Trump official recently explained — and people opposed to Trump need to accept that.

“Trump’s approach to corruption is to do everything in the open,” Anthony Scaramucci, Trump’s former communications director, explained on X on Thursday. “Make it so ridiculous and so inundating that people’s heads spin and then once they’re numb, keep going.”

Scaramucci then mentioned one of Trump’s most notorious scandals — the Jeffrey Epstein files, which despite many illegal redactions implicate Trump in at least one alleged sexual assault against a 13-year-old girl.

“Yet, Trump masterfully buried the lead on all of it — through a war, through noise, through sheer volume of chaos,” Scaramucci wrote. “When you ask voters what they care about, the Epstein files are at the bottom of the list. They want jobs and gas prices they can afford. Trump’s corruption isn’t even on their radar screen.”

For this reason, Scaramucci warned that people who oppose Trump should “not underestimate him. He’s sitting at 34% approval and he still has 9/10 self-identified Republicans doing whatever he says. He says bark. They say woof. He says jump. How high, sir?”

He concluded, “That’s the architecture of power he’s built and it’s more durable than his critics want to admit.”

Scaramucci has repeatedly criticized Trump supporters for their seeming unwillingness to ever turn on the president, regardless of what he does. On Wednesday Scaramucci posted on X that “Trump is a symptom, not the disease. If it wasn’t him it would be someone else with the same narcissistic, populist impulses — because the underlying conditions that created him haven’t changed.”

He then expressed some sympathy for Trump supporters, noting that they are suffering from immense economic hardships because of rising prices and lowered economic opportunities.

“When people feel the system is rigged against them and nobody in power is fixing it, they check out,” Scaramucci said. “When they check out long enough, someone like Trump comes along and becomes the avatar for all that anger. They adhere to him even when he’s doing the exact opposite of what he promised. The idea that when Trump loses power in 2028 things revert to normal — that’s not going to happen.”

The former Trump official added on Tuesday, though, that Trump’s policies are making Americans’ lives much worse instead of better.

“If Barack Obama had done half of what Trump is doing now, Fox News would have been calling for impeachment,” Scaramucci wrote, referring to how Trump’s spending — much unauthorized by Congress — is on pace to increase the national debt by $9 to $10 trillion by the start of 2029

“Trump has no economic philosophy,” Scaramucci wrote. “He spent $8.2 trillion in his first term and he's on pace for $9 to $10 trillion in this one. We're at 100 percent debt to GDP held by investors — 122 percent if you count the Fed's balance sheet. Ray Dalio will tell you those numbers put you in sovereign debt crisis territory. And when that happens, the only way politicians are willing to pay for it is through inflation. Which is the cruelest possible outcome, because inflation is the worst tax you can impose on lower and middle income people.”

Speaking with this author for Salon in 2018, Scaramucci said even that Trump’s movement is fueled by economic grievances.

“What I saw was in a generation we went from aspirational working class families, like the one I grew up in, to [desperate] working class families,” Scaramucci said. “What I saw is a decline in wages causing some level of economic asphyxiation for a very large group of people. And so Trump being out there, going into those areas, explaining the policies that he’s going to put in place, and then executing on some of those policies. I mean it’s not me saying, it’s just go look at ‘The Wall Street Journal.’”
