The Internet Computer (IC) utilizes its native utility token, ICP, to facilitate a complex ecosystem of governance, resource allocation, and network security. The protocol is governed by the Network Nervous System (NNS), an algorithmic DAO that manages everything from technical upgrades to the underlying tokenomics.
Issuance Mechanism
The Internet Computer employs an inflationary issuance model to reward network participants. As of May 28, 2024, the total supply of ICP has grown to approximately 518.98 million tokens through two primary inflationary mechanisms:
- Voting Rewards: Distributed to tokenholders who stake ICP in "neurons" and participate in governance. The estimated annual inflation rate for these rewards was approximately 6.91% as of May 2024, with a planned quadratic decrease to 5.00% by eight years after the network's Genesis.
- Node Provider Rewards: Remuneration for the independent data centers that provide the physical infrastructure for the network. These rewards are calculated based on the 30-day moving average price of ICP in Special Drawing Rights (XDR) to ensure providers can cover fiat-based operating costs.
Allocation Mechanism
The initial distribution of ICP tokens involved several rounds of financing and community engagement. Notable allocations include:
- Seed Round (Feb 2017): Raised approximately $3.9 million from 370 participants at a price of $0.03 per token.
- Airdrop (May 2018): Approximately 3.76 million ICP (0.80% of the initial supply) were allocated to early community supporters.
- Service Nervous System (SNS) Swaps: A decentralization mechanism where participants send ICP to an SNS swap canister to receive staked tokens of a specific DAO-governed application.
Usage and Incentive Mechanism
ICP serves four primary functions within the protocol:
- Governance: Tokenholders stake ICP to create neurons, allowing them to vote on proposals and earn rewards.
- Gas (Cycles): ICP is burned to create Cycles, which power computation and storage. This follows a "Reverse Gas Model" where developers, rather than users, pay for resources. One XDR worth of ICP always creates one trillion cycles.
- Node Remuneration: ICP is issued to reward node providers for their hardware and connectivity.
- Medium of Exchange: ICP is used for account transfers (incurring a 0.0001 ICP burned fee), participating in DAO swaps, and purchasing ecosystem assets like NFTs.
Locking Mechanism
To participate in governance, ICP must be locked in a Neuron. The locking mechanism is defined by several key parameters that determine a user's Voting Power:

Voting Power is calculated as: (ICP staked + maturity staked) x Dissolve Delay Bonus x Age Bonus.
Unlocking Time and Vesting
Unlocking ICP is not instantaneous; it requires a "dissolving" process.
- Dissolving State: A neuron must be placed in a "dissolving" state to start the countdown of its dissolve delay. During this time, the age bonus is lost.
- Disbursement: Only when the dissolve delay reaches zero can the tokenholder "disburse" the neuron, which transfers the ICP back to their ledger account.
- Historical Vesting: Seed round participants received their tokens at Genesis but were placed in 49 different neurons with dissolve delays ranging from 0 to 48 months, effectively creating a 4-year vesting schedule. Airdrop participants received their tokens via a monthly distribution schedule over one year starting from May 10, 2021.
