Cardano (ADA) is a third-generation blockchain platform utilizing a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism known as Ouroboros. Its token economics are designed to ensure long-term sustainability, network security, and decentralized governance.

Issuance Mechanism

The issuance of ADA is governed by a fixed maximum supply and a decaying inflation model.

• Maximum Supply: The total supply of ADA is capped at 45,000,000,000 (45 billion) tokens.
• Initial Minting: Approximately 31.1 billion ADA were minted during the Genesis Block distribution.
• Inflationary Rewards: The remaining 13.8 billion ADA are held in a "reserve" and are gradually released as block rewards.
• Monetary Expansion: Each five-day epoch, 0.30% of the remaining ADA in the reserve is moved into a "pot" to be distributed as rewards. This mechanism ensures that while new tokens are issued, the rate of issuance decreases over time as the reserve shrinks.
• Burn Mechanism: There is currently no burn mechanism for ADA; the supply is managed solely through issuance and transaction fee redistribution.

Allocation Mechanism

The initial distribution of ADA was divided between public sale participants and the founding entities responsible for the network's development.

The 5.19 billion ADA allocated to the core organizations were distributed to support long-term development and ecosystem growth:

• Input Output Global (IOG): ~2.46 billion ADA
• EMURGO: ~2.07 billion ADA
• Cardano Foundation: ~648.20 million ADA

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

ADA serves as the primary utility and governance token within the Cardano ecosystem, driving network security and participation.

Token Utility

• Network Fees: Every transaction requires a fee paid in ADA to cover processing and storage costs. Fees are calculated using a formula: a * size(tx) + b, where 'a' and 'b' are constants that can only be changed via a hard fork.
• Staking and Security: ADA is used to secure the network through the Ouroboros PoS mechanism.
• Governance: ADA holders can participate in Project Catalyst to vote on funding for ecosystem projects. With the transition to the Voltaire era (CIP-1694), ADA holders gain on-chain voting rights over the treasury and network upgrades.

Incentives for Participants

Rewards are paid out every five-day epoch from a "pot" consisting of 100% of network fees and the 0.30% reserve expansion.

• Stake Pool Operators (SPOs): Receive rewards for producing blocks, minus a fixed cost and a margin percentage.
• Delegators: Tokenholders who delegate their ADA to a stake pool receive a proportional share of the pool's rewards.
• Treasury: A fixed 20% of the reward pot is redirected to the Cardano Treasury to fund future development and community projects.

Locking Mechanism

Cardano’s staking system is unique because it does not require a traditional locking period for basic network participation.

• Liquid Staking: ADA holders retain full custody of their tokens while staking. Tokens are never "locked" in a smart contract for consensus purposes; they remain in the user's wallet and can be spent or moved at any time.
• Allegra Era Upgrades: The Allegra hard fork introduced a specific "token locking" capability for non-staking use cases. This allows tokens to be "reserved" for a specified period to represent:
  • Voting Rights: Ensuring a vote is not double-counted.
  • Contractual Agreements: Reserving assets for complex deal settlements.
• Governance Deposits: To register as a Delegate Representative (DRep), a refundable deposit of 500 ADA is required.

Unlocking Time

Because Cardano utilizes liquid staking, there is no "unlocking time" or "unbonding period" for delegated ADA. Users can withdraw or transfer their funds instantly.

However, there are specific timelines related to the activation of rewards:

• Stake Activation: It takes two epochs (approximately 10 days) for newly delegated stake to become active in the snapshot.
• Reward Distribution: Rewards for a specific epoch's work are typically distributed three epochs after the initial delegation.
• Vesting for Founding Entities: While the ICO tokens were available at launch, IOG disclosed that two-thirds of its initial allocation was subject to a vesting schedule that concluded in June 2019. Currently, there are no major recorded upcoming unlock events for the core ADA supply, as the majority of the non-circulating supply is held in the reserve for epoch-based distribution.
