Secretary Scott Bessent, the first openly gay Cabinet secretary, needled Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) over not being married, poked fun at the president, and commented about Rep. Nancy Mace's (R-S.C.) breasts during the annual Hibernian Society of Charleston banquet.
According to local FITSNews, Bessent was in his home state for a St. Patrick’s Day party, where he was making jokes about his fellow Republicans, the Daily Beast reported.
The event is a "famed gathering" where speakers do a kind of roast speech. Local reports said that Bessent "had them rolling in the aisles."
“The reason Lindsey Graham isn’t married is he has no first cousins in the Upstate,” Bessent said of Graham, mockery that is generally used for "hillbillies" or "rednecks."
His diss on Mace was far more inflammatory, talking about her cleavage.
“In California, Silicon Valley is where they make the computers,” Bessent reportedly said. “In South Carolina, Silicon Valley is the space between Nancy Mace’s t—.”
One source told the local news outlet that Mace never said t— and instead said "chest." Mace hasn't commented on the joke.
He also said that Mace made news that day by “not doing anything crazy." It's a reference to Mace's often unhinged behavior that was on full display during a recent battle with security at her local airport.
Typically, the speeches are off the record, but it still ends up in the press, the report said, "meaning politicians and officials who speak there know anything they say can (and potentially will) be used against them."
Bessent also mocked President Donald Trump's obsession with seizing various countries. Bessent announced, “Ireland’s next."
But it was former Gov. Mark Sanford (R), who got the majority of the jokes. Sanford once disappeared, with staff claiming that he was hiking the Appalachian Trail. In reality, he was having an affair and was in Argentina. "Hiking the Appalachian Trail" then began being used as a euphemism for having an affair.
