The Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth (JASDFW) convened approximately 100 business leaders, policymakers, scholars, and community members at Southern Methodist University for the Japan Currents 2026 forum. The event focused on the theme ‘Innovation and Growth: Urbanization and Globalization in the U.S.–Japan Partnership,’ presenting a timely exchange on the evolving bilateral relationship. This annual program is presented by JASDFW in partnership with the SMU Tower Center and receives support from Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the Japan Currents series. The event was also streamed live to additional attendees across the country through the network of National Japan America Societies.

The program opened with a keynote luncheon featuring Mikio Sugeno, Senior Editorial Writer and Chair of the Editorial Board at Nikkei Inc. Sugeno’s remarks examined ‘Sanaenomics and the U.S.–Japan Relationship — Will Japan Really Gain Momentum for Change?’ His analysis explored Japan’s recent snap election results and the associated economic challenges and opportunities through the lens of emerging policy debates. This keynote set the stage for a deeper discussion on the political and economic forces influencing the partnership.

A dynamic afternoon panel expanded the conversation with perspectives from industry and academia. Panelists included Chris Carter from Toyota Motor North America, Russell Keith from 1Finity (formerly Fujitsu Network), Dr. Kristin Vekasi from the University of Montana, and Mike Chmielecki from Nomura Research Institute. The discussion, moderated by Dr. Hiroki Takeuchi of the SMU Tower Center, connected the forum’s theme to real-world decision-making. It addressed how organizations navigate rapid change, shifting investment patterns, and evolving geopolitical and market realities. The panel underscored the practical implications of innovation and urbanization for corporate strategy and international cooperation.

Beyond the formal presentations, the forum emphasized connection, with conversations continuing throughout luncheon and networking breaks. Attendees exchanged perspectives across sectors, linking corporate strategy to public policy and local opportunity to global partnership. This interaction reinforced North Texas’s role as an active hub in the U.S.–Japan relationship. The Japan Currents series is part of a national public affairs program inaugurated by the National Association of Japan-America Societies with support from the Embassy of Japan in Washington, DC, designed to elevate thoughtful, regionally grounded dialogue on U.S.–Japan cooperation. The discussions at this forum highlight the critical importance of sustained dialogue in addressing shared challenges related to technological advancement and urban development, which are central to future economic growth for both nations.
