Leading Academic Health System Expands Access with Compact, Single-Room Proton Technology

LITTLETON, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–#MevionFIT–Mevion Medical Systems today announced that UNC Health, a leading academic health system based in North Carolina, has selected the MEVION S250-FIT™ Proton Therapy System, reinforcing the growing adoption of compact, single-room proton therapy platforms among top-tier institutions.

Proton therapy enables highly precise radiation delivery while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissue, making it an important option for treating tumors near critical organs and for complex adult and pediatric cases.

UNC Health’s decision reflects a growing shift among leading academic health systems toward right-sized, capital-disciplined proton therapy programs that prioritize integration, speed to treatment, and long-term sustainability.

The MEVION S250-FIT system is designed to support accessible, scalable proton therapy deployment for health systems seeking to establish or expand their cancer programs. Its compact, single-room footprint enables integration within existing facilities while reducing infrastructure complexity.

UNC Health’s installation will include an upright patient positioning system from Leo Cancer Care, supporting enhanced flexibility in patient setup and future clinical workflows. The platform also includes DirectARC™ delivery capability, enabling efficient beam delivery and advanced clinical workflows.

By converting an existing LINAC treatment room to support proton therapy within its established oncology ecosystem, UNC Health aims to streamline care delivery, expand access to advanced radiation treatment, and preserve continuity for patients and care teams.

“For patients and families facing cancer, access matters — access to the right care, at the right time, without unnecessary burden,” said Jean Wright, MD, chair of the UNC Department of Radiation Oncology. “By offering innovative proton therapy here in the Triangle, we’re bringing highly advanced treatment closer to home and integrating it into the care environment patients already know and trust.”

“Health systems today are seeking ways to introduce proton therapy without the financial and operational burden historically associated with large facilities,” said Tina Yu, Ph.D., CEO and President of Mevion Medical Systems. “UNC Health’s decision reflects a broader movement among leading academic institutions toward disciplined, phased deployment models that prioritize patient access, speed to treatment, and long-term sustainability.”

Mevion is the only U.S.-based manufacturer of proton therapy systems, designing and building its technology domestically. Its compact platform enables advanced proton therapy capabilities while aligning with the financial, operational, and workforce realities facing modern academic and integrated health systems worldwide.

UNC Health joins a growing number of leading institutions adopting compact proton therapy platforms as a strategic path to modernize radiation oncology services — reinforcing a new phase of proton therapy defined by accessibility, integration, and long-term sustainability.
