'Idiots': Senate Republican scoffs at residency accusations as he eyes governorship

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) isn't losing any sleep over questions about his Alabama residency as the former football coach takes aim at becoming the state's next governor.

Tuberville laughed off concerns about whether he meets the state's seven-year continuous residency requirement to run for governor, dismissing critics with a blunt insult.

"I laugh at them," Tuberville laughed during a brief interview with Raw Story. "These people are idiots. No, I'm good. I'm way over, as a matter of fact."

When asked if he was worried at all about residency requirements, Tuberville again scoffed.

"I wouldn't have done it if I was worried," he said, adding that the group's challenging him can't beat him otherwise.

"I hope they spend a lot of money on it," he concluded.

Tuberville isn't alone in dismissing the challenge. The Alabama Republican Party also isn't taking the challenge seriously, which was filed by Ken McFeeters, an insurance agent running against Tuberville for the GOP nomination. McFeeters told the Alabama Reflector he believes Tuberville lives in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.

“If you look at it, he does not live in Alabama. And we the people of Alabama, we’re not stupid,” McFeeters said.

Tuberville’s campaign said it provided the Alabama GOP with “definitive proof” that he has continuously lived in the state since 2019.
