Google searches for ‘move to Greenland’ hit an all-time high as Trump seeks to ‘buy’ the island

Worldwide Google searches for “move to Greenland” have surged to a record high this week as President Donald Trump continues to fly new ideas on how to acquire the autonomous Danish territory.

Notably, U.S. officials are now allegedly considering offering Greenlanders payments of up to $100,000 in exchange for supporting a potential secession from Denmark, according to a January 9 report by Reuters

While no official proposal has been publicly confirmed, the keyword trend highlights growing global curiosity about the future of the Arctic island.

‘Move to Greenland’ search trend inspired by cash incentives

While the White House continues to express interest in purchasing Greenland, the authorities in Copenhagen and Nuuk have repeatedly made it clear that the island with a population of about 57,000 is not for sale.

Still, the idea of direct payments to residents themselves has emerged as one of the more serious pathways for Washington to advance its ambitions to expand U.S. territory further, barring direct military conflict.

Although critics often see the push as surreal, many admit that Greenland occupies a strategically vital position in the Arctic, a region of growing importance when it comes to organizing new shipping routes and intensifying competition over natural resources.

Accordingly, cash incentives could be seen as reducing the complex questions of self-governance and self-determination to a mere monetary transaction, potentially alienating a large swathe of the population that has long weighed independence while relying economically on Denmark.

The consultation was published on May 2, 2025, and opened a public discussion on operational responsibilities and safeguarding requirements for digital assets (CoinDesk). The goal is to make the rules clearer without hindering the sector’s evolution. According to the data collected by our regulatory monitoring team, in the first weeks following the publication, the feedback received from professionals and operators focused mainly on custody, incident reporting, and insurance requirements. Industry analysts note that many responses require technical clarifications on multi-sig, asset segregation, and recovery protocols, as well as proposals to scale obligations based on the size of the operator. FCA Consultation: What’s on the Table The consultation document clarifies how to apply rules inspired by traditional finance to the crypto perimeter, balancing innovation, market integrity, and user protection. In this context, the goal is to introduce minimum standards for all firms under the supervision of the FCA, an essential step for a more transparent and secure sector, with measurable benefits for users. The proposed pillars Obligations towards consumers: assessment on the extension of the Consumer Duty – a requirement that mandates companies to provide “good outcomes” – to crypto services, with outcomes for users that are traceable and verifiable. Operational resilience: introduction of continuity requirements, incident response plans, and periodic testing to ensure the operational stability of platforms even in adverse scenarios. Financial Crime Prevention: strengthening AML/CFT measures through more stringent transaction monitoring and structured counterpart checks.
