An alleged arson attack hit Berlin over the weekend, causing a massive power outage to 45,000 households and 2,200 commercial entities. The fire broke out on a cable bridge over Teltow Canal near the Lichterfelde power station, exposing unsuspecting citizens to near-freezing temperatures.

Southwest Berlin suffered a significant power outage due to a fire breakout. The fire began on a cable bridge over the Teltow Canal near the Lichterfelde power station over the weekend.

Southwest Berlin suffers power outages affecting thousands

In an official statement dated January 5, the grid operator Stromnetz Berlin stated that the fire was extinguished on January 3 and plans were underway to restore electricity to affected households and businesses.

The grid operator highlighted that technical measures to restore power had been initiated in the Zehlendorf district, leading to the restoration of power to 27,800 households and 1,450 enterprises. These measures include connecting an emergency power generator.

The entity detailed that it managed to reconnect five hospitals and 67 out of 74 care facilities in the affected districts on January 4. Stromnetz Berlin estimated that it intends to restore power in all affected areas by January 8. The power outage comes amid cold conditions and snowy weather with sub-zero daily temperatures.

Local officials claim the power outage was an arson attack from a left-wing extremist group called The Vulkangruppe (The Volcano Group). Iris Spranger, Berlin’s interior affairs minister, called the attack “left-wing terrorism” during a press conference on Monday.

Kai Wegner, Berlin’s mayor, said that “It is unacceptable that left-wing extremists are once again openly attacking our electricity grid and thereby endangering human lives.” Security officials stated that the attack had links to previous incidents by far-left extremists.

German left-wing militants are allegedly responsible for the attack

Rumors suggest that the German left-wing militants claimed responsibility for the attack, citing the climate crisis and the development of artificial intelligence infrastructure. The rumors also suggest that the organization released a 2,500-word pamphlet claiming it had “cut the juice of the ruling class.” The note condemned high emissions from fossil fuels and called the attack an “act of self-defence” and an “action in the public interest.”

The message allegedly included details of the fire and highlighted that AI data centers were exacerbating the ongoing climate crisis caused by harmful energy consumption. The group supposedly apologized to the less fortunate who were affected by the power outage, but categorically excluded “many villa owners” who fell victim to the power outage.

The attack comes from a similar arson attack that took place four months ago, leading to a power outage that affected more than 50,000 households. In its 2024 annual security report, Germany’s domestic intelligence watchdog, Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz), cited repeated attacks on the regional power grid by Vulkangruppe.

Elon Musk’s German TeslaGigafactory also fell victim to an arson attack in March 2024. The facility had to shut down temporarily after an electric substation close by was set on fire. The left-wing extremist group also claimed responsibility for the attack in a similar letter and criticized Tesla’s environmental credentials.

The news comes amid growing competition in the AI sector. A previous report by cryptopolitan highlighted that OpenAI, Perplexity, and Microsoft have launched AI-powered browsers to rival Google’s dominance. AI browsers aim to revolutionize the web search infrastructure by providing a platform for AI agents to handle tasks such as bookings and purchases. However, prompt injection attacks still pose a significant risk to AI browsers by allowing hackers to manipulate how LLMs behave.
