COP30 fails to agree on fossil-free future

MANILA, Philippines – Thirty years since the UN climate change talks began, the world still winds up with a decision text that does not mention fossil fuels — the main driver of the climate crisis.

Throughout the UN climate change summit (COP30) held in the Amazon, Brazil, more than 80 nations wanted the roadmap to transition away from fossil fuels included in the text. In the end, however, this was not mentioned in the text. Parties such as Colombia, Panama, and the European Union expressed objections to the final decision after the gavel fell. Many climate groups left Belem disappointed.

But there is development outside the COP process. A band of nations in support of the roadmap to phaseout fossil fuels will come together in Colombia in April next year to discuss steps forward. Rappler’s climate reporter Iya Gozum gives a rundown of the outcome in this video.
