Former FBI Director Christopher Wray’s wife received a security detail, however, the couple did share a home together in Atlanta while he led the agency.
The FBI did not immediately return a request for comment from Forbes.
Why Patel’s Jet Flights Are Controversial
Patel has faced months of criticism for his use of jets owned by the bureau for personal travel. In October, Patel used an FBI jet to fly to a small airport in State College, Pennsylvania, where Wilkins was performing the national anthem before a pro wrestling event. Patel appeared in photos with Wilkins at the event, which were later posted on the country singer’s social media accounts. The jet flew to Nashville the next day, where Wilkins lives, the Wall Street Journal reported. FBI directors are required by law to travel on government aircraft rather than on commercial airlines, and Patel has long defended his jet use by pointing to this requirement. However, Patel was a noted critic of this policy before he took the reins of the investigative agency. Days after his trip to State College, Patel used an FBI jet once again to travel to San Angelo, Texas. That weekend, Patel visited a luxury exotic hunting resort called Boondoggle Ranch, the Wall Street Journal later reported, which is owned by Republican donor C.R. “Bubba” Saulsbury Jr. The ranch’s website has since been taken down and replaced with a “coming soon” page as of mid-November.
