Police urge public not to revive old Sungai Buloh ‘azan’ issue

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 — Police have reminded the public not to recirculate an old issue involving allegations that the Subuh (dawn) azan had disrupted residents’ sleep in Sungai Buloh, which has recently resurfaced on social media.

Sungai Buloh district police chief Supt Mohd Hafiz Muhammad Nor said checks found that the post, titled Dakwaan Azan Subuh Ganggu Tidur, Adun Buat Laporan Polis (Allegation of Subuh Azan Disrupting Sleep, Adun Lodges Police Report), referred to an old case that had already been investigated and dealt with in accordance with the law.

He urged the public not to speculate or share unverified information that could affect racial and religious harmony.

“Police will not hesitate to take firm action against any party found spreading fake news, incitement or content that could disrupt public order,” he said in a statement tonight.

Mohd Hafiz said the viral post was linked to an incident that occurred around June 2021 involving a non-Muslim man who allegedly entered a surau in Puncak Alam without permission.

The incident later prompted a former state assemblyman to lodge a police report after receiving complaints about the man’s actions.

According to the viral post, the man, who was wearing shorts, had entered the surau to check the volume of its loudspeakers after receiving complaints from other non-Muslim residents who claimed the Subuh azan had disturbed their sleep. — Bernama
