Trump's ex-campaign adviser issues president brutal warning: 'Subpoenas and subpoenas'

GOP strategist David Urban, who in 2016 served as President Donald Trump’s senior campaign adviser, issued his former boss a harsh warning on Sunday, cautioning the president that he may soon face a wave of congressional subpoenas if he doesn’t dramatically shift course ahead of the midterm elections.

Appearing on CNN, Urban was responding to Trump’s remarks last week where he told reporters that he didn’t “care about the midterms” as it relates to his deeply unpopular war against Iran.

“People are putting their hand in their pocket and pulling out a $20, they've got to pump their gas, get their kids a pizza – makes things much, much more difficult,” Urban said.

“And so the president may care a great deal [about the midterms] when he comes back in January of next year because they're going to get nothing but subpoenas and subpoenas and subpoenas if the House does flip.”

Democrats have already outlined their plans should they reclaim control of the House, plans that involve a wave of congressional subpoenas to be issued to everyone in Trump’s orbit, including White House ballroom donors, law firms that “signed deals” with the president, media giants that settled cases with Trump, and even the president's own family members.

And, with analysts predicting a potentially historic loss for the GOP in November, Urban laid out what he argued were the two “giant problems” facing the White House.

“Now toward the midterms, they have to pass a bunch of legislation. Part of that is the president's ballroom, they're looking for funding there, part of it is this compensation fund being all held up in the Senate,” Urban said.

“I don't think that gets through, I don't think the House [or] Senate votes are there, Republicans are going to exact a pound of flesh on that. And then moving forward going to the midterms, it's very difficult. Republicans are structurally pushing a big rock up a hill because the party in power, traditionally, loses seats.”
