The Quantum Threat and BNB Chain’s PQC Tests

As quantum computing advances, it threatens to break the cryptographic algorithms that secure most blockchains today. BNB Chain’s report explores how the network might defend itself. The tests used the ML-DSA-44 standard for transaction signatures and something called pqSTARK technology to aggregate consensus votes. The good news: the system remains compatible with the current address structure, RPC infrastructure, SDKs, and wallets. So the upgrade path seems technically feasible without breaking existing tools.

Data Sizes Explode, Transaction Speed Drops

But the bad news is about size and speed. Transaction signature size ballooned from 65 bytes to roughly 2,420 bytes. Transaction size itself jumped from about 110 bytes to 2.5 KB. And block sizes reached around 2 MB. That is a huge increase in data overhead.

More troubling for users: cross-region tests showed the network’s transactions per second dropped by about 40% to 50%. That is a serious hit to throughput. However, the pqSTARK aggregation mechanism helped keep validator load manageable. The report claims a compression ratio of about 43:1 on the validator side, which helped optimize data load.

Future Trade-offs and Next Steps

BNB Chain stated in its announcement: “Post-quantum readiness is technically possible on BSC today. However, the growth in data sizes and network constraints remain the biggest trade-offs.” So the network is ready for the quantum era, but maybe not at the speed users expect. The team will likely need to optimize further before rolling out PQC features widely.

This is a reminder that quantum resistance comes with costs. For now, BNB Chain has shown it can adapt — but at a price in performance. The crypto community will watch how they manage these trade-offs in coming months.
