Pepe (PEPE) is a meme cryptocurrency launched on April 14, 2023, on the Ethereum blockchain. Designed primarily for entertainment purposes, it leverages the cultural significance of the "Pepe the Frog" meme. The project operates with a decentralized, community-driven ethos, characterized by a lack of formal structure and a "stealth" launch without a presale.

Issuance Mechanism

The issuance of PEPE was conducted through a fair launch mechanism with no private or public sales. The total and maximum supply is capped at 420,690,000,000,000 (420.69 trillion) tokens.

At launch, the creators utilized a "stealth" approach, meaning there was no prior announcement or marketing to specific groups before the tokens were made available. The token contract was subsequently renounced, ensuring that no central entity or individual can mint additional tokens or alter the contract's core functions.

Allocation Mechanism

The initial allocation of the 420.69 trillion PEPE tokens was divided into two primary categories to facilitate immediate liquidity and future growth:

As of late 2024, the vast majority of the supply (~99.97%) remains on the Ethereum network, though small portions have been bridged to BNB Smart Chain and Arbitrum.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

PEPE is explicitly described by its project team as "completely useless" and intended solely for entertainment. It does not confer any claims on capital, voting rights, or profit-sharing.

Primary Characteristics:

• Zero Tax Policy: The protocol does not impose any transaction taxes, which is intended to attract a wider user base by eliminating friction in trading.
• Deflationary Mechanism: The token contract includes a manual "burn" function. The team has historically used this to reduce supply and increase scarcity.
• Redistribution: Some project descriptions mention a redistribution system designed to reward long-term holders, though as of December 2024, there are no programmatic or automated staking rewards or fee-earning mechanisms active.
• Historical Utility: Previously, holding at least one PEPE token granted access to the "Pepe Palace" Discord server, but this functionality has since been discontinued.

Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Time

The locking and unlocking structure for PEPE is unique due to its meme-coin nature and the renouncement of its contract.

Locking and Security:

• Liquidity Provider (LP) Tokens: Upon launch, the LP tokens for the initial Uniswap pool were burnt, effectively "locking" that liquidity permanently as it can never be withdrawn by the creators.
• Multi-sig Control: The 6.9% of the supply reserved for exchanges was originally held in a multi-sig wallet requiring 5 out of 8 signers. Following an internal incident in August 2023 where former team members illicitly transferred tokens, the control was reduced to a 2/8 multi-sig setup, which the remaining team claims is secure.
• Blacklisting: The contract features a "blacklist" function that allows the owner to prohibit specific addresses from transferring tokens. This was used once shortly after launch to block an address that acquired ~0.60% of the supply. Because the contract was renounced after this action, the blacklisted address can never be removed.

Unlocking Schedule:

Unlike traditional VC-backed projects, PEPE does not have a formal vesting schedule or periodic "unlock" events for team members or investors.

The data indicates that the entire supply was effectively "unlocked" at the time of launch, with the circulating supply matching the total supply (minus any tokens manually burnt or held in the project's multi-sig wallet). There are no future scheduled unlocks for this asset.
