Solana’s token economics are designed to support a high-performance Layer-1 blockchain through a combination of disinflationary issuance, staking incentives, and fee-burning mechanisms. The native token, SOL, serves as the primary asset for network security, transaction processing, and resource allocation.

Issuance Mechanism

Solana employs a deterministic, protocol-driven inflationary issuance schedule. This disinflationary model is characterized by three primary parameters:

• Initial Inflation Rate: The starting annualized growth rate of the total supply, which was set at 8.00% when inflation was first enabled in February 2021.
• Disinflation Rate: The rate at which the inflation rate is reduced annually. Solana’s inflation decreases by 15.00% per "epoch year" (approximately 360 days).
• Long-term Inflation Rate: The terminal annual inflation rate, set at 1.50%, at which point the issuance rate will remain fixed.

New tokens are automatically created by the protocol and distributed to validators and their delegators as rewards for securing the network.

Allocation Mechanism

The initial distribution of SOL tokens was divided among several key stakeholder groups to balance ecosystem growth, team incentives, and public access.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

SOL is the functional utility token of the network, utilized for several core purposes:

• Transaction Fees: Users pay SOL to process transactions and execute smart contracts. Fees consist of a static base fee per signature and a variable fee based on computational "compute units." Users may also include an optional "prioritization fee" to expedite processing.
• Staking and Security: Tokenholders can stake SOL to operate a validator or delegate their tokens to existing validators. This secures the network via a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus.
• Rewards: Validators and delegators earn SOL from two sources:
  1. Inflationary Rewards: Distributed pro rata based on the total amount of SOL staked.
  2. Transaction Fees: Currently, 50.00% of transaction fees are distributed to the validator (Slot Leader) that processes the block, while the remaining 50.00% are burned. (Note: A pending update, SIMD-0096, proposes sending 100% of fees to the Slot Leader).
• Storage Rent: Accounts on Solana are charged "rent" in SOL to compensate validators for maintaining the network state in memory. Currently, 100.00% of collected rent fees are burned.

Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Time

Solana’s token supply has been subject to various locking and vesting schedules to manage market liquidity and align long-term incentives.

• Team and Founder Vesting: Approximately 63.95 million SOL were allocated to the project team. Half of the founders' allocations were unlocked at launch, with the remaining 50% unlocking monthly over the subsequent 24 months.
• Foundation Constraints: The Solana Foundation committed to adding no more than 8.00 million SOL to the circulating supply per month through the end of 2020.
• Strategic Unlocks: Large-scale unlocks have occurred periodically. For instance, a significant unlock in January 2021 expanded the circulating supply by 462% in a single day.
• Future Unlocks: Specific agreements with entities like Alameda Research involve linear monthly unlocks extending through January 2028. Major "cliff" unlocks are also scheduled for March 2025 (7.5 million SOL) and May 2025 (61.85 million SOL).
• Staking Lockups: While SOL can generally be unstaked, the protocol limits the amount of total stake that can be deactivated in a single epoch (typically ±25% of the total staked supply) to maintain network stability. Additionally, certain tokens sold in early auctions were subject to a 12-month lockup period.
