The designated survivor you’ve never heard of

In a strange twist, Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calf.) announced he was picked as the "designated survivor" for President Donald Trump's 2026 State of the Union address. It prompted a lot of questions from the congressional press.

In an X post Monday, Thompson said, "I’ve been selected as a designated survivor for tomorrow’s State of the Union, so I won’t be there in person, but I’ll be watching. Americans deserve accountability for the militarization of ICE, terrorization of our communities and killing of American citizens."

"A designated survivor? [F]or what?" asked Punch Bowl News founder Jake Sherman in a since-deleted X post.

Author and NBC News reporter Jonathan Allen wrote, "Narrator: Mike Thompson is not in the line of succession."

"Wait, what?" questioned Capitol Hill reporter Juliegrace Brufke.

In fact, the only member of Congress specifically named in the line of succession is the Speaker of the House, who is second on the list after the vice president. The rest are members of the Cabinet, USA.gov explained.

However, after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Congress began naming a person to be among the designated survivors from their branch of the legislature.

ABC News reported in 2016 that the designated congressional survivor's purpose is "to ensure the continuity of the legislative branch."

“There has to be continuity,” said Michael Stokke told ABC. He previously served as deputy chief of staff to former House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.). “If a plane hit the House when you’re in a joint session, you’re taking out a majority of Congress.”

“You need someone there to understand why we did certain things, and what rules applied to the House,” he said.

Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) was the one who chose him, Thompson said in a press release.

When the planes crashed into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, United Airlines Flight 93 was targeting a federal government building in Washington D.C. It crashed in Stonycreek Township, Pennsylvania, instead.

The designated survivor in the Cabinet began in the late 1950s during the Cold War, though the first time it was announced was in 1981 after former President Ronald Reagan's speech, History.com said.

China Blocks Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000D as Local Chips Rise

The post China Blocks Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000D as Local Chips Rise appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. China Blocks Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000D as Local Chips Rise China’s internet regulator has ordered the country’s biggest technology firms, including Alibaba and ByteDance, to stop purchasing Nvidia’s RTX Pro 6000D GPUs. According to the Financial Times, the move shuts down the last major channel for mass supplies of American chips to the Chinese market. Why Beijing Halted Nvidia Purchases Chinese companies had planned to buy tens of thousands of RTX Pro 6000D accelerators and had already begun testing them in servers. But regulators intervened, halting the purchases and signaling stricter controls than earlier measures placed on Nvidia’s H20 chip. Image: Nvidia An audit compared Huawei and Cambricon processors, along with chips developed by Alibaba and Baidu, against Nvidia’s export-approved products. Regulators concluded that Chinese chips had reached performance levels comparable to the restricted U.S. models. This assessment pushed authorities to advise firms to rely more heavily on domestic processors, further tightening Nvidia’s already limited position in China. China’s Drive Toward Tech Independence The decision highlights Beijing’s focus on import substitution — developing self-sufficient chip production to reduce reliance on U.S. supplies. “The signal is now clear: all attention is focused on building a domestic ecosystem,” said a representative of a leading Chinese tech company. Nvidia had unveiled the RTX Pro 6000D in July 2025 during CEO Jensen Huang’s visit to Beijing, in an attempt to keep a foothold in China after Washington restricted exports of its most advanced chips. But momentum is shifting. Industry sources told the Financial Times that Chinese manufacturers plan to triple AI chip production next year to meet growing demand. They believe “domestic supply will now be sufficient without Nvidia.” What It Means for the Future With Huawei, Cambricon, Alibaba, and Baidu stepping up, China is positioning itself for long-term technological independence. Nvidia, meanwhile, faces…

The post VanEck Targets Stablecoins & Next-Gen ICOs appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. Welcome to the US Crypto News Morning Briefing—your essential rundown of the most important developments in crypto for the day ahead. Grab a coffee because the firms shaping crypto’s future are not just building products, but also trying to reshape how capital flows. Crypto News of the Day: VanEck Maps Next Frontier of Crypto Venture Investing VanEck, a Wall Street player known for financial “firsts,” is pushing that legacy into Web3. The firsts include pioneering US gold funds and launching one of the earliest spot Bitcoin ETFs. Sponsored Sponsored “Financial instruments have always been a kind of tokenization. From seashells to traveler’s checks, from relational databases to today’s on-chain assets. You could even joke that VanEck’s first gold mutual funds were the original ‘tokenized gold,’” Juan C. Lopez, General Partner at VanEck Ventures, told BeInCrypto. That same instinct drives the firm’s venture bets. Lopez said VanEck goes beyond writing checks and brings the full weight of the firm. This extends from regulatory proximity to product experiments to founders building the next phase of crypto infrastructure. Asked about key investment priorities, Lopez highlighted stablecoins. “We care deeply about three questions: How do we accelerate stablecoin ubiquity? What will users want to do with them once highly distributed? And what net new assets can we construct now that we have sophisticated market infrastructure?” Lopez added. However, VanEck is not limiting itself to the hottest narrative, acknowledging that decentralized finance (DeFi) is having a renaissance. The VanEck executive also noted that success will depend on new approaches to identity and programmable compliance layered on public blockchains.
