TLDR

  • Elon Musk said X Money is live in a closed beta inside the company.
  • He said a limited external beta will start in the next 1–2 months.
  • Musk said X Money is built as a central hub for transactions on X.
  • X tested wallet and peer payments in 2025 and worked with Visa on payments.

Elon Musk says X Money will launch an external beta in 1–2 months. He said the payments service is already running. It is live in a closed beta inside the company. Musk gave the update during an xAI all-hands presentation on Wednesday. He said the first public step will be limited. He also said the service will later reach X users worldwide.

Musk sets timeline after internal closed beta inside the company

Elon Musk said X Money has been tested by staff for a period of time. “For X Money, we’ve actually had X Money live in closed beta within the company,” he said. He then shared the next phase. “We expect in the next month or two to go to a limited external beta.”

He also described the role he expects the product to play on the platform. “This is intended to be the place where all money is,” Musk said. He also called it “the central source of all monetary transactions.” He did not provide a firm date for the worldwide release.

Musk also gave user figures during the same talk. He said X has about 1 billion installed users. He said average monthly users are around 600 million. He linked new services to higher day-to-day use.

X Money positioned for peer transfers and broader in-app money activity

Musk said X Money is meant to be a single hub for financial actions within X. He described it as part of a wider plan for daily use. “As we give people more reasons to use the X app,” he said, “we want it to be such that if you want to, you could live your life on the X app.”

The company has not shared full feature details for the external beta. It has not listed fees, transfer limits, or supported countries. It has also not said how users will be selected. Musk only confirmed the staged rollout plan.

X Money is expected to focus on peer-to-peer transfers at the start. It may also support other payment flows inside the app. Musk framed the product as integrated with other tools. He referenced communications and Grok alongside payments.

Visa work, XChat rollout, and crypto plans that remain unconfirmed

X has pursued payments since Musk acquired Twitter in October 2022 and rebranded it as X. The platform has since expanded into AI tools and long-form video. X Money adds a financial layer to that expansion. In early 2025, X began beta testing wallet functions and person-to-person payments.

The effort included a collaboration with Visa, according to earlier company statements. Musk did not describe how the Visa work connects to the current closed beta. X has also rolled out XChat, an encrypted messaging system inside the platform. It consolidates direct messages into a single inbox.

Musk has compared its security protections to “Bitcoin-level encryption.” The company has not released full technical details for public review. Musk did not confirm whether X Money will support crypto assets. He did not name any token or network. The company has also not disclosed any crypto roadmap for the product
