Tote bags might just be one of the most democratic items in anyone’s closet. Almost everyone owns at least one — regardless of budget and style — and they’re used in ways that feel both practical and personal. This ubiquitous piece is seen almost everywhere — carried in offices and classrooms, stuffed with grocery items, filled with novelties from a weekend fair, or simply tucked as a “just in case” bag inside another bag.

What makes them interesting is that, unlike those bags you use for specific occasions, tote bags are neither strictly fashion nor utility. They sit in that in-between space where everyday life happens. And in that sense, a tote is almost a quiet record of someone’s routines. A bookstore tote suggests you’re a reader, a gym tote shows how you like to move, and a free event tote says something about the subcultures you belong to.

It’s a simple item, but it ends up telling about one’s daily life and interests potentially more than other accessories do.

That’s also what makes tote bags surprisingly good conversation starters. Ask someone what tote they use most, and you’ll rarely get a generic answer. “For function, I usually go for a MUJI jute bag or a UNIQLO canvas tote. The MUJI jute bags are really handy because they look polished but are still affordable. They’re like elevated shopping bags with no loud branding, and the larger sizes can fit a lot. If I’m carrying randomly sized items, I just grab a big one and throw everything in.
