TLDR

  • Tether froze $544M in crypto to aid Turkey’s crackdown on illegal betting.
  • Tether has assisted in over 1,800 investigations, freezing $3.4B in suspected illicit funds.
  • Tether works with law enforcement agencies worldwide to combat money laundering.
  • Turkey’s investigation into illegal betting networks has led to over $1B in asset seizures.

Tether has once again collaborated with law enforcement authorities, this time assisting Turkish prosecutors in seizing approximately $544 million in cryptocurrency. The funds were tied to an illegal online betting operation run by Veysel Sahin, a figure now accused of money laundering and operating unlawful betting platforms. This action is part of a broader investigation into underground gambling activities in Turkey.

The Role of Tether in the Seizure

The cryptocurrency involved in this case was issued by Tether Holdings, the company behind the popular stablecoin USDt. As revealed by Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino, the company acted on a request from Turkish authorities who provided relevant information.

After reviewing the data, Tether acted in accordance with Turkish laws to freeze the assets. “Law enforcement came to us, they provided some information, we looked at it, and we acted,” said Ardoino in a statement to Bloomberg.

This seizure is part of a growing trend where Tether has worked with international law enforcement agencies to freeze illicit assets tied to criminal activities. To date, Tether has assisted in over 1,800 investigations across 62 countries, freezing more than $3.4 billion in USDT tied to suspected illicit activities.

The Ongoing Investigation in Turkey

The investigation into Sahin’s network has been extensive. Prosecutors in Istanbul have focused on illegal online gambling and money laundering. Sahin’s operations allegedly spanned across multiple countries, using cryptocurrency as a means to move and launder funds. As part of the investigation, Turkish authorities have already seized over $1 billion in assets linked to these illicit networks.

Tether’s assistance highlights the importance of stablecoins like USDT in the ongoing fight against financial crime. Stablecoins have gained prominence due to their use in international transactions, but their potential for abuse has led to greater scrutiny from regulators and law enforcement agencies.

Tether’s Growing Role in Combating Illicit Activities

Tether’s efforts extend beyond the Turkish case. According to analytics firm Elliptic, Tether and its competitor, Circle, have blacklisted approximately 5,700 wallets holding over $2.5 billion in cryptocurrencies. Many of these addresses contained USDT at the time of the freeze, showcasing Tether’s ongoing role in halting the flow of illicit funds.

In addition to its law enforcement collaborations, Tether has also been linked to various investigations in the U.S. and abroad, where its stablecoin was used for suspected money laundering activities. Despite this, Tether remains a vital tool in the global fight against crypto-related crime.

The Broader Implications of Crypto and Money Laundering

Stablecoins, especially those issued on the Tron network, continue to be central to discussions on cryptocurrency’s role in illicit activities. Reports from Bitrace and other blockchain researchers indicate that a significant percentage of stablecoin transactions flow through high-risk addresses

In 2024, it was reported that approximately 5.14% of total stablecoin transaction volume moved through such addresses, with the majority involving USDt on the Tron network.

Despite these challenges, stablecoin issuers like Tether and Circle continue to comply with regulatory requirements and assist law enforcement agencies. The ongoing efforts aim to maintain the integrity of the cryptocurrency ecosystem while minimizing the impact of criminal activities.

New Trump appointee Miran calls for half-point cut in only dissent as rest of Fed bands together

The post New Trump appointee Miran calls for half-point cut in only dissent as rest of Fed bands together appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. Stephen Miran, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers and US Federal Reserve governor nominee for US President Donald Trump, arrives for a Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee confirmation hearing in Washington, DC, US, on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025. The Senate Banking Committee’s examination of Stephen Miran’s appointment will provide the first extended look at how prominent Republican senators balance their long-standing support of an independent central bank against loyalty to their party leader. Photographer: Daniel Heuer/Bloomberg via Getty Images Daniel Heuer | Bloomberg | Getty Images Newly-confirmed Federal Reserve Governor Stephen Miran dissented from the central bank’s decision to lower the federal funds rate by a quarter percentage point on Wednesday, choosing instead to call for a half-point cut. Miran, who was confirmed by the Senate to the Fed Board of Governors on Monday, was the sole dissenter in the Federal Open Market Committee’s statement. Governors Michelle Bowman and Christopher Waller, who had dissented at the Fed’s prior meeting in favor of a quarter-point move, were aligned with Fed Chair Jerome Powell and the others besides Miran this time. Miran was selected by Trump back in August to fill the seat that was vacated by former Governor Adriana Kugler after she suddenly announced her resignation without stating a reason for doing so. He has said that he will take an unpaid leave of absence as chair of the White House’s Council of Economic Advisors rather than fully resign from the position. Miran’s place on the board, which will last until Jan. 31, 2026 when Kugler’s term was due to end, has been viewed by critics as a threat from Trump to the Fed’s independence, as the president has nominated three of the seven members. Trump also said in August that he had fired Federal Reserve Board Governor…
