El uso ilícito de criptomonedas en plataformas de intercambio de criptomonedas centralizadas (exchanges) alcanzó su nivel más bajo desde que existen mediciones, un análisis de Binance basado en datos de Chainalysis y TRM Labs confirma que las transacciones vinculadas directamente a actividades ilegales hoy solo representan entre 0.018 y 0.023% del volumen total operado en los siete principales exchanges.

Binance, la plataforma de intercambio de activos digitales con mayor volumen y número de usuarios a nivel mundial, en junio del 2025 apenas 0.007% de su volumen estuvo asociado a fondos ilícitos según Chainalysis, esto es más de 2.5 veces menor que el promedio del resto del sector. TRM Labs coincidió, el indicador de Binance fue aproximadamente 30% inferior al de otras plataformas.

La exposición directa mide qué porcentaje de las operaciones de un exchange puede rastrearse hacia billeteras utilizadas en delitos confirmados, como ransomware, estafas, hackeos o violaciones de sanciones, en términos simples, si un dólar de cada 10,000 que procesa una plataforma proviene o termina en una dirección ilícita, su exposición es de 0.01 por ciento.

Tasas tan bajas como las actuales indican que las plataformas están detectando y bloqueando intentos de actividad ilegal antes de que circulen en el sistema, y este control ocurre en un entorno donde, a diferencia del dinero tradicional, cada transacción queda registrada en la tecnología de cadena de bloques (blockchain) permitiendo seguimiento en tiempo real.

Binance destaca que pese a la narrativa que asocia a las criptomonedas con el crimen financiero los datos contrastan drásticamente con lo que ocurre en el sistema financiero tradicional.

Al respecto, el “Global Financial Crime Report 2024”, informe elaborado por el Nasdaq estima que en el 2023 circularon 3.1 billones de dólares en fondos ilícitos por canales bancarios y fiduciarios. Organismos como la ONU y el FMI calculan que entre 2 y 5% del PIB global, esto es cerca de 2 billones de dólares, se lava cada año mediante mecanismos tradicionales.

En comparación, la exposición ilícita combinada de los siete mayores exchanges de criptomonedas es inferior a 10,000 millones de dólares anuales según Chainalysis y TRM Labs. Incluso la Casa Blanca en su informe Strengthening American Leadership in Digital Financial Technology del 2025 subrayó que el lavado de dinero mediante activos digitales es considerablemente menor al observado en moneda fiduciaria, transferencias bancarias y servicios financieros tradicionales.

El análisis también confirma una tendencia sostenida, entre enero del 2023 y junio del 2025 Binance redujo su exposición directa a flujos ilícitos entre 96 y 98%, una mejora más rápida que la de su competencia. El avance es particularmente significativo debido al tamaño de la plataforma, cuyo volumen total es comparable al de sus seis competidores principales juntos.
