Renovating your home can be a great way to maximize its resale potential and make it a more relaxing and comfortable space to spend time.  Whether you are a homebody or somebody who spends their time on the go, upgrading your home can massively increase the enjoyment you get out of being there.

However, renovating one’s home can be very expensive. If you are planning on undertaking home renovations, there are a few things you can do to save money. This post will tell you what they are, so you can bring down the overall cost of your project.Image Source: https://unsplash.com/photos/low-angle-photo-of-city-high-rise-buildings-during-daytime-PhYq704ffdA

Carefully Plan Your Project

The first thing you need to know if you want to undertake a home renovation project is that planning is absolutely essential. Whether you want to refit your kitchen with standalone kitchen ranges or tear up the tiles in your bathroom, planning is key. Planning your project can prevent things from going wrong, and keep everything on budget. But how can you plan a renovation project?

  • Work out a budget. Budgeting should be the first thing you do when planning a home renovation project. Until you know exactly how much you have to spend, it’s unwise to make any other plans. A proper budget will give you clear direction.
  • Speak to your loved ones. Make sure you talk to the people you live with and find out whether they are on board with your renovation project or not. If you share a house, then you need to work together.
  • Decide on contractors. If you plan on undertaking major renovations, you will need the support of a contractor.
  • Obtain permits. You may also need to obtain permits and planning permission if you are going to undertake major home renovations, as if you do not have the required permits, you could get fined.

Reuse Materials

Reusing materials is one of the best ways for you to save money.  If you have a large house with a lot of space, the chances are that somewhere on your property, there will be things you can reuse and recycle. An alternative to reusing materials you already own is to buy them. On secondhand markets, it’s commonplace for people to list used building materials. Sometimes you can even get these for free.

Use Secondhand Tools

The next thing you can do to save money is to make use of secondhand tools. Buying all new tools can cost a fortune, and leasing them isn’t cheap either. By buying secondhand tools, you will be able to save a vast amount of money. You will also get the added benefit of having your own tools for future projects, whereas if you lease them, you will have to give them back.

Execute Projects Yourself

Rather than hiring contractors, which was mentioned earlier, you may want to consider carrying projects out yourself. If you carry out and execute your own projects, you can save a small fortune. Contractors can cost a lot of money. If you do decide to hire contractors, however, then make sure you shop around and find ones with good reviews. A contractor’s reviews can tell you everything you need to know about them and help you to determine their suitability.

Choose Durable Materials

Whether you reuse materials or buy brand new ones, you need to make sure you choose the most durable materials that you can. This is so that you don’t have to replace them in the future. Low-quality materials will, without a doubt, deteriorate and become unusable prematurely.  The best materials you can use are almost always:

  • Wood is a great material, because it is regenerative. There are many different types, however. Some are more suited to home renovation projects than others. Speak to a professional and get advice relative to your project.
  • There are many different types of metal. Find the one that works for your project. If you are going to use metal, it’s essential that you have the right tools and that you install it properly. Failing to do so could lead to it coming loose or deteriorating.
  • Concrete is a material used in many different home renovation projects. The biggest benefit of concrete is that you can prepare and mix it yourself, which means you don’t need to enlist a professional’s support. With that said, if you are new to working with concrete, it is a good idea to get in touch with an expert and ask for their help.

Home renovation projects can be a lot of fun. They can also be expensive. Your main priority as a homeowner who is in the process of undertaking a renovation project should always be saving money. Use the guidance given here to get a better understanding and idea of how you can do that.

Cashing In On University Patents Means Giving Up On Our Innovation Future

The post Cashing In On University Patents Means Giving Up On Our Innovation Future appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. “It’s a raid on American innovation that would deliver pennies to the Treasury while kneecapping the very engine of our economic and medical progress,” writes Pipes. Getty Images Washington is addicted to taxing success. Now, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is floating a plan to skim half the patent earnings from inventions developed at universities with federal funding. It’s being sold as a way to shore up programs like Social Security. In reality, it’s a raid on American innovation that would deliver pennies to the Treasury while kneecapping the very engine of our economic and medical progress. Yes, taxpayer dollars support early-stage research. But the real payoff comes later—in the jobs created, cures discovered, and industries launched when universities and private industry turn those discoveries into real products. By comparison, the sums at stake in patent licensing are trivial. Universities collectively earn only about $3.6 billion annually in patent income—less than the federal government spends on Social Security in a single day. Even confiscating half would barely register against a $6 trillion federal budget. And yet the damage from such a policy would be anything but trivial. The true return on taxpayer investment isn’t in licensing checks sent to Washington, but in the downstream economic activity that federally supported research unleashes. Thanks to the bipartisan Bayh-Dole Act of 1980, universities and private industry have powerful incentives to translate early-stage discoveries into real-world products. Before Bayh-Dole, the government hoarded patents from federally funded research, and fewer than 5% were ever licensed. Once universities could own and license their own inventions, innovation exploded. The result has been one of the best returns on investment in government history. Since 1996, university research has added nearly $2 trillion to U.S. industrial output, supported 6.5 million jobs, and launched more than 19,000 startups. Those companies pay…
