Vitalik Buterin Sets Timeline for Ethereum Quantum-Resistant Transition

Cryptographic security is again in focus as there is a claim that quantum computers are advancing rapidly, with severe consequences. Per the latest insights, Ethereum cofounder Vitalik Buterin has warned that quantum computing could decrypt elliptic curve cryptography in less than three years.

Quantum risk and need for new cryptography

In a post on X, Solid Intel noted that at Devconect, an Ethereum developer event, Buterin charged developers to transition to quantum-resistant cryptography within the next three years in order to stay secure.

This has become necessary because of rapid developments with quantum computers and their ability to crack systems.

Notably, the “elliptic curve cryptography” is what secures several blockchain, such as Ethereum and Bitcoin. So, if quantum computers can decrypt these blockchains, it could spell doom for the cryptocurrency industry.

As per Solid Intel’s claims, Buterin has warned that the ability of quantum computers to do this could happen before the 2028 presidential elections in the U.S. This gives developers a very tight timeline of less than four years to build quantum-resistant computers.

The Ethereum cofounder believes that this is the only way for blockchains to stay secure amid the rapid development of such computers. It implies that failure to transition to quantum-resistant cryptography could expose Ethereum to security risks.

Primarily, cases of hacks could spike as perpetrators leverage quantum computers to compromise the Ethereum network and other blockchains. This might lead to the stealing of private keys to gain access to user funds.

A malicious attacker might also forge transactions in order to spend someone else’s coin. Such a development could put investors’ funds at risk and affect confidence in decentralized finance.

These threats make Vitalik Buterin’s warning very critical to ensure that the cryptocurrency industry stays ahead of the possible threats from quantum evolution.

Ethereum’s security vision

Community members believe Ethereum is in a good position to lead other blockchains in developing an energy-efficient and quantum-secure blockchain.

Others in the crypto space have also urged developers not to treat the threat lightly. The overall assumption is that the timeline might be shorter than anticipated, hence the need for prompt action.

Interestingly, in September 2025, Vitalik Buterin had, in a presentation at the Japanese Developer Conference, teased Ethereum’s future plans. Buterin had mentioned that Ethereum intends to build the most secure, future-proof network possible.

He assured listeners that the plan is to do it without compromising the simplicity of the blockchain for users.

EUR/CHF slides as Euro struggles post-inflation data

The post EUR/CHF slides as Euro struggles post-inflation data appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. EUR/CHF weakens for a second straight session as the euro struggles to recover post-Eurozone inflation data. Eurozone core inflation steady at 2.3%, headline CPI eases to 2.0% in August. SNB maintains a flexible policy outlook ahead of its September 25 decision, with no immediate need for easing. The Euro (EUR) trades under pressure against the Swiss Franc (CHF) on Wednesday, with EUR/CHF extending losses for the second straight session as the common currency struggles to gain traction following Eurozone inflation data. At the time of writing, the cross is trading around 0.9320 during the American session. The latest inflation data from Eurostat showed that Eurozone price growth remained broadly stable in August, reinforcing the European Central Bank’s (ECB) cautious stance on monetary policy. The Core Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices (HICP), which excludes volatile items such as food and energy, rose 2.3% YoY, in line with both forecasts and the previous month’s reading. On a monthly basis, core inflation increased by 0.3%, unchanged from July, highlighting persistent underlying price pressures in the bloc. Meanwhile, headline inflation eased to 2.0% YoY in August, down from 2.1% in July and slightly below expectations. On a monthly basis, prices rose just 0.1%, missing forecasts for a 0.2% increase and decelerating from July’s 0.2% rise. The inflation release follows last week’s ECB policy decision, where the central bank kept all three key interest rates unchanged and signaled that policy is likely at its terminal level. While officials acknowledged progress in bringing inflation down, they reiterated a cautious, data-dependent approach going forward, emphasizing the need to maintain restrictive conditions for an extended period to ensure price stability. On the Swiss side, disinflation appears to be deepening. The Producer and Import Price Index dropped 0.6% in August, marking a sharp 1.8% annual decline. Broader inflation remains…
