Christy, a biopic about female boxing icon Christy Martin starring Sydney Sweeney, is reportedly coming soon to digital streaming.
Rated R, Christy premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September before opening in theaters nationwide on Nov. 7. The official summary for Christy reads, “Christy Martin (Sweeney) never imagined life beyond her small-town roots in West Virginia — until she discovered a knack for punching people. Fueled by grit, raw determination, and an unshakable desire to win, she charges into the world of boxing under the guidance of her trainer and manager-turned-husband, Jim (Ben Foster).
“But while Christy flaunts a fiery persona in the ring, her toughest battles unfold outside it — confronting family, identity, and a relationship that just might become life-or-death. Based on remarkable true events, Christy Martin’s story is one of resilience, courage, and the fight to reclaim one’s life.”
Produced by Sweeney and directed by David Michôd, Christy is expected to be released on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, Dec. 9, according to When to Stream. While When to Stream is typically accurate with its PVOD reports, the streaming tracker noted that Christy’s distributor, Black Bear Pictures, has not announced or confirmed the release date and it is subject to change.
When Christy arrives on PVOD, it will be available on such digital platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Prime Video and YouTube. New film releases on PVOD typically cost anywhere from $19.99 to $29.99 to purchase or $14.99 to $24.99 to rent for 48 hours.
How Did Audiences And Critics Receive ‘Christy’?
Christy to date has earned $1.785 million domestically and nearly $8,500 internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $1.793 million. Christy had a $15 million production budget before prints and advertising costs, Deadline reported.
Christy earned a 66% “fresh” critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 158 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, “While Christy falters in tonal cohesion and emotional impact, it remains a compelling showcase for Sydney Sweeney’s transformative performance, grounding a mythic genre in raw, personal storytelling.”
In addition, Christy landed a knock-out punch with audiences with 96% “fresh” score on RT’s Popcornmeter based on 100-plus reviews. The RT audience summary is still pending.
Also starring Merritt Wever, Katy O’Brian, Jess Gabor, Coleman Pedigo, Tony Cavelero, Brian Hibbard and Ethan Embry, Christy is expected to arrive on PVOD on Dec. 9.
