Last Saturday, Fox Sports analyst and former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez was rushed to the hospital following stab wounds during a midnight discourse outside of a hotel in Indianapolis, Indiana.

As of yesterday, while still hospitalized in stable condition, he was given two misdemeanor charges and a Level 5 felony battery charge for his role in the dispute between he and an elderly delivery truck driver.

Marion County prosecutor Ryan Mears announced in a press conference with local Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Chris Bailey that Sanchez would be receiving the felony charge of battery causing serious bodily harm. The former 2009 first-round selection is also facing public intoxication and unlawful entry of a motor vehicle charges.

“This was a situation that did not need to occur,” the prosecutor said. “The allegations involve a 38-year-old man becoming involved in an altercation with a 69-year-old man who sustained significant and very severe injuries as a result of that altercation.”

Sanchez was set for a hearing on the original misdemeanor charges today, but it was rescheduled to Nov. 4

Sanchez was visiting Indianapolis ahead of last Sunday to call the Colts-Raiders game with Fox Sports play-by-play announcer Chris Meyers. If convicted for the serious bodily harm charge, Sanchez would face between one to six years in prison.

According to reporter Alex Croft of the Independent, footage captures Sanchez and the 69-year-old grease truck driver getting into a dispute near the Loughmiller Pub & Eatery in downtown Indianapolis. Court documents confirm the argument derived from Sanchez being irate that the truck driver parked his vehicle at a hotel’s loading dock in order to collect used cooking oil from the building.

The probable cause affidavit further unveils that the driver (named P.T. in the documents) couldn’t hear Sanchez’s claims because he didn’t have on his hearing aid. Sanchez then began following P.T. from side-to-side of his delivery truck before the driver made a dash back towards his vehicle’s door. The document states that Sanchez stopped the delivery driver by grabbing and tossing him into the hotel building wall.

Footage further captures the brawl kicking off between a nearby dumpster and the driver’s parked vehicle with Sanchez “seen throwing [the man] to the ground on the west side of the alley”. The document also reveals that Sanchez began climbing into the driver’s vehicle before being told he was not allowed in it.

The affidavit highlights that Sanchez told the 69-year-old man that he was informed by the hotel manager that the driver’s services weren’t needed. Sanchez then resumed his attempt to enter the driver’s vehicle and reportedly even denied the man from calling his own job’s manager to remedy the situation.

P.T. told police he realized that the incident had escalated. In response, he pepper sprayed Sanchez who wiped it from his face and advanced towards the driver.

In response to Sanchez’s advances, P.T. stabbed the former New York Jets quarterback twice before falling to the ground. From a prone laying position, he saw the feet of Sanchez still advancing towards him which made him realize he was in a “life-or-death” situation.

The driver made it back to his feet and stabbed at Sanchez one last time before the former quarterback came towards him.

“The next thing P.T. knew was Mr. Sanchez looked at him with a look of shock, he slowly turned around, and Mr. Sanchez took off northbound in the alley,” the document said.

TMZ captured footage of Sanchez seeming to leave the scene of the crime from an alleyway with half of his shirt covered in blood while staggering slightly and clutching at his stab wounds. The truck driver is allegedly suing Sanchez as well citing being permanently disfigured following the attack.

While Sanchez attorney James Voyles declined to comment, the former USC quarterback’s younger brother Nick released a statement yesterday on behalf of his brother and their family.

“This has been a deeply distressing time for everyone involved. Mark and our family are incredibly grateful for the concern, love, and support we’ve received over the past few days,” Sanchez’s brother, Nick, said in a statement released Monday. “Mark remains under medical care for the serious injuries he sustained and is focused on his recovery as the legal process continues. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the first responders and medical staff.”

Following a 10-year NFL playing career, Sanchez began a career in television where he appeared on ABC and ESPN for two years before joining Fox sports as an analyst in 2021.
