OpenAI will widen access to GPT-5.6 this week as Elon Musk prepares a rival Grok release that could cut into the launch.

Key Points:

GPT-5.6 Rollout

OpenAI said GPT-5.6 will reach more users Thursday, after the Trump administration asked the company to release the model in stages.

The company said last month that a version of GPT-5.6 had been shared with a limited group of partners for feedback before wider access. That approach followed closer government scrutiny of frontier AI systems and their possible misuse.

The new model family has three versions, Sol, Terra and Luna. Sol is the flagship system, with stronger agentic abilities in coding, biology and cybersecurity, while Terra is aimed at everyday work and Luna is built for speed and lower cost.

The rollout comes after a dispute between Anthropic and the administration over Fable and Mythos models. The administration imposed an export ban, citing risks tied to cyberattacks, and Anthropic suspended the models before Fable 5 returned last week.

Musk AI Rivalry

Musk moved quickly after OpenAI’s announcement. He said SpaceXAI would launch Grok 4.5 in the coming days and described it as an “Opus-class model, but faster, more token-efficient and lower cost.”

The comparison points directly at Anthropic’s Opus line, one of the advanced model families now shaping enterprise AI demand. It also shows how AI labs are trying to sell efficiency, not only raw capability, as customers watch token costs more closely.

The timing revives the long fight between Musk and Sam Altman, OpenAI’s chief executive. Musk, who co-founded OpenAI and later left, sued the company and its leaders in 2024, accusing them of abandoning a nonprofit agreement.

That case went to trial earlier this year, and Musk lost after a jury found he had waited too long to sue. The fight now shifts back to products, with Google also expected to release Gemini 3.5 Pro later this month, according to Business Insider.
