The United States' World Cup match against Belgium became a political flashpoint after President Donald Trump pressured FIFA officials to overturn a controversial one-game suspension of U.S. star player Folarin Balogun.
The suspension was overturned, allowing Balogun to play Monday night.

Despite the president's intervention, the U.S. team lost 4-1 and will not advance to the quarter-finals, thus ending their run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Following Belgium's fourth goal, the Belgian Red Devils posted a two-word message to Trump on social media, "Overturn this," which garnered over 5.5 million views. People reacted to the post on social media.
Comedian and actor Kevin Fredericks reacted on X, “They cooked with this one. I’m sorry."
"We are rightly a laughingstock," wrote California-based film producer Franklin Leonard on X.
Former MSNBC host and Zeteo founder Mehdi Hasan posted, “Thanks Donald Trump for allowing the rest of the world to mock our football team because you couldn’t stop ruining everything you stick your nose into."
Critics noted the World Cup had been a U.S. success story until Trump's intervention.
