TLDR

  • Vitalik Buterin said Ethereum is preparing its biggest protocol rebuild since the 2022 Merge.
  • The Lean Ethereum roadmap focuses on quantum safety, privacy, scalability, and lighter node operations.
  • Ethereum plans to use recursive STARKs so nodes can verify compact proofs instead of repeating every transaction.
  • Buterin said blockchain state changes may become the most disruptive part of the long-term roadmap.
  • Ether rose more than 12% on the week and traded near $1,777.

Ethereum recorded another major roadmap update after Vitalik Buterin outlined a long-term rebuilding plan. He described the effort as the biggest protocol transformation since the 2022 Merge. The proposal targets stronger security, greater scalability, and better privacy over several years.

Biggest Rebuild for Ethereum

Vitalik Buterin presented fresh research findings after recent developer meetings. He called Ethereum’s next phase the third major network iteration. The updated roadmap outlines changes planned across three to four years.

The proposal follows the Lean Ethereum framework introduced during July 2025. It replaces major protocol components while limiting disruption for existing applications. Buterin also released an updated roadmap, describing it as a “strawmap.”

The revised plan increases several development priorities after recent technical discussions. Ethereum will replace vulnerable cryptographic systems with quantum-safe alternatives. Buterin said the changes now carry greater urgency across the network.

Quantum Goals Reshape Ethereum

Quantum resistance now ranks among the project’s highest development priorities. Researchers believe future quantum computers could weaken current blockchain cryptography. Therefore, developers want stronger protection before that technology becomes practical.

Ethereum also raised privacy to a “first-class goal” within future protocol design. The roadmap supports private transactions without depending on intermediaries. Developers also want privacy features built directly into core network systems.

The proposal changes how nodes verify blockchain activity across the network. Recursive STARKs allow compact proof verification instead of repeating every calculation. Consequently, the approach reduces computing demands while improving efficiency.

Ethereum Maps Next Network Phase

Buterin identified blockchain state as the most disruptive planned protocol change. State stores account balances, contract data, and ownership records across the network. Every completed transaction updates that shared record immediately.

Ethereum limits traditional dynamic state growth while introducing cheaper storage formats. The proposal supports more than 100 terabytes by 2030 through improved architecture. Meanwhile, nodes avoid storing every record using older methods.

The roadmap also considers replacing the current virtual machine over time. Ethereum may eventually adopt RISC-V beneath the existing EVM architecture. Buterin said the EVM could remain a higher-level development layer.

Network capacity should also expand steadily through several scheduled protocol upgrades. Glamsterdam should deliver a significant performance increase before Hegotá arrives. Buterin expects Hegotá to become the final upgrade before the Lean era begins.

The roadmap remains a long-term technical strategy rather than an immediate release. Ethereum plans stronger privacy, faster verification, and broader scalability through coordinated protocol upgrades. Ether also gained more than 12% during the week and traded near $1,777.
