The Algorand Foundation has announced a new roadmap aiming to make its blockchain network broadly quantum-resistant by the end of 2027. The announcement comes at a time when the crypto industry is increasing its preparations to withstand a possible future in which quantum computers could threaten current cryptographic systems underpinning digital assets.

Transition process to start in 2026

According to the roadmap, the first steps will take place in 2026. At this stage, post-quantum accounts, multisignature wallets, and staking support will be introduced. In later phases, protection will be extended to more fundamental protocol components.

The Foundation stated that this is a continuation of initiatives launched in 2022, with the goal of reaching full network-wide quantum resilience by the end of 2027.

Quantum resistance becomes an industry priority

Currently, most major blockchains rely on elliptic curve cryptography to secure wallets and transactions. However, experts warn that sufficiently advanced quantum computers could potentially break these protections. While there is consensus that such machines are not yet available, public institutions, tech companies, and crypto projects are actively preparing for a future migration to more secure systems.

Mini glossary: Post-quantum cryptography refers to the next generation of encryption methods that even powerful quantum computers would struggle to break. NIST, the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, leads the effort to standardize these new methods.

Google has urged organizations to begin preparing for the move to post-quantum cryptography and has already integrated quantum-secure standards into parts of its infrastructure, targeting full transition by 2029. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology is also spearheading the standardization of post-quantum algorithms and is working on a timeline to phase out some legacy cryptographic systems.

Ethereum and Solana take similar action

Quantum preparedness is becoming an increasingly strategic priority in the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Earlier this year, the Ethereum Foundation launched a dedicated post-quantum security initiative to explore migration pathways for wallets, applications, and validators. Solana developers have also released proposals on how users and the network could transition to quantum-resistant cryptography if the threat becomes imminent.

The Algorand Foundation stressed the importance of beginning preparations ahead of what the industry calls Q Day—a hypothetical moment when a quantum computer becomes capable of breaking the cryptography protecting digital assets.

The Foundation indicated that its timeline is expected to complete preparations ahead of NIST’s plans to retire certain cryptographic standards. According to the announcement, Algorand aims to reach its target three years before the deadline outlined for national security systems by the U.S. National Security Agency.
