PETALING JAYA: The Unity Week celebration, which began yesterday and will run until June 14 under the theme “Bersama Membina Negara Bangsa”, aims to foster social harmony and stronger ties among Malaysians.

The programme, organised by the national unity ministry, will be officiated by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in Kota Kinabalu tomorrow. The programme carries profound significance in strengthening harmony and shaping the identity of a multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and multicultural nation.

More than a symbolic event, it serves as an effective new avenue for integration at the grassroots level, enabling Malaysians to embrace and experience the true meaning of national unity.

Over the four-day celebration, a wide range of activities centred on sports, culture, and the arts will be held to cultivate a stronger spirit of togetherness.

Highlights include exhibitions by government agencies, a nation-building showcase, the Rukun Tetangga Progressive Economic Carnival, a book fair, the Rumah Kami exhibition, the FoodUnites sales programme, and entrepreneurship initiatives.

Visitors can also explore several major exhibitions designed to educate and deepen appreciation of Malaysia’s heritage and identity.

One of the main attractions is the “Raja Kita: Loyalty to King and Country” exhibition, which aims to deepen public understanding of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s role in Malaysia’s parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy.

Managed by the museums department, the exhibition seeks to ensure that the institution remains preserved as a symbol of sovereignty and unity for all Malaysians.

Rumah Kami showcases richness of 15 ethnic cultures

The Rumah Kami exhibition features replicas of traditional homes representing various ethnic and cultural communities, offering visitors insight into their identities, traditional attire, music, and customs.

The exhibition also includes demonstrations on traditional cuisine, wedding ceremonies, games, dances, musical instruments, and handicrafts.

Fifteen ethnic groups will be featured: Kadazan, Dusun, Murut, Rungus, Bajau, Bugis, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu (Penan, Kayan, Kelabit, Kenyah and Lun Bawang), Melanau, Iban, Bruneian communities, Kedayan, Banjar, Chetti, and Portuguese communities.

Visitors can also participate in cross-cultural sessions where they can share experiences from different cultural backgrounds, take part in an ethnic homes passport challenge that encourages them to complete activities at each house, and explore ethnic-themed infographics and quizzes to test their knowledge.

Ethnic village brings traditions to life

An ethnic village will also feature traditional Malay, Chinese, Indian, Baba Nyonya, and Siamese houses, offering a variety of interactive cultural experiences.

Visitors will have the opportunity to watch demonstrations on traditional food preparations, wedding ceremonies, games, dances, musical performances, and handicrafts that reflect Malaysia’s rich cultural diversity.

Interactive education strengthens unity in future generations

The exhibitions and interactive educational programmes held throughout the event place a strong emphasis on experiential learning, helping visitors better understand and appreciate cultural diversity in building a harmonious and prosperous Malaysia Madani.

The programme also provides opportunities for the public to learn about the history, customs, languages, and cultures of different communities while strengthening social bonds and national harmony.

Activities include services provided by the National Library of Malaysia and Sabah State Library, a Petrosains exhibition, a Sabah history exhibition, AR/VR Metaverse technology showcases, the Reading Corner@Cafe, Free Play E-Sports, interactive activities such as basic Jawi quizzes and reading promotion initiatives, as well as the Kembara Ilmu @ Sabah programme.

The 2026 Unity Week celebration continues to serve as an important platform for strengthening national unity through a more interactive, inclusive, and community-centred approach.
