KUALA LUMPUR: Police are investigating claims of corruption and abuse of power involving the chief of a police station in the city.
Kuala Lumpur police chief Fadil Marsus said the probe was to verify the allegation.
“The district police chief and the integrity and standard compliance department have been directed to probe the matter, and the investigation is ongoing,” he told reporters after launching a safety awareness campaign here.
He said the officer’s statement had been taken, and that he remained on active duty.
“If we find that an offence has been committed, we will take action,” he added.
It was alleged that a police inspector had forced his subordinates to collect “protection money” from gaming shops and massage parlours around Wangsa Maju.
The allegations were made in a screenshot that went viral on social media.
It was also alleged that the inspector ordered his subordinates to extort foreigners, and brought “guest relations officers” or GROs to the station.
