MANILA, Philippines – Cotabato City Mayor Mohammad Ali “Bruce” Matabalao has resigned from the United Bangsamoro Justice Party (UBJP), a setback for the political party of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) ahead of the Bangsamoro region’s first parliamentary elections.

Matabalao announced his decision on Thursday, June 11, saying this was preceded by a period of prayer and reflection, and that he had sought guidance on this.

His resignation could weaken the UBJP’s political position in Cotabato City, the administrative center of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), which also hosts the seat of the regional government.

A day earlier, Matabalao wrote to UBJP president Ahod Balawag “Al Haj Murad” Ebrahim, former interim chief minister of BARMM, informing him of his decision to sever ties with the party. He had kind words, expressing gratitude for UBJP’s support during his mayoral campaign and for its role in his entry into public service.

Matabalao did not give a clear reason for his resignation, but told reporters he would serve as vice president of the newly formed Bangsamoro Federalist Party (BFP), which has announced support for the parliamentary bid of BARMM interim Chief Minister Abdulraof Macacua for a district seat in Maguindanao del Norte.

One of BFP’s prominent figures is Naguib Sinarimbo, former BARMM interior minister. Macacua also previously served as a regional minister under Murad before being appointed Maguindanao del Norte governor and subsequently as interim chief minister.

An electoral victory in Maguindanao del Norte could strengthen Macacua’s position to retain leadership of the Bangsamoro regional government if elected by the parliament, which will replace the current transitional arrangement.

“This decision was never about me. In many ways, it meant setting aside personal aspirations and carrying a burden that has weighed heavily on my heart for a long time,” Matabalao said in part of his letter to UBJP leadership. “I chose the path that I sincerely believe is best for the future of Cotabato City and our people. I know not everyone will understand. I only ask for your prayers.”

Matabalao’s resignation comes as political groups prepare for the first parliamentary elections in the BARMM, scheduled for September.

UBJP, formed by the MILF as it transitioned from an armed movement into electoral politics under the Bangsamoro peace process, has sought to consolidate influence across the autonomous region and currently dominates the Bangsamoro Transition Authority.

Signs of internal rifts have emerged in recent months following changes in the region’s interim leadership, including the replacement of Murad as interim chief minister by Macacua.

Incidentally, Macacua’s brother, Tamano, serves as BFP secretary-general.  – Rappler.com
