BOXABL, a company known for its foldable housing solutions on Earth, has unveiled a conceptual off-world habitation system called UFO (Unidentified Folding Object), designed to address the challenges of transporting and deploying livable structures beyond Earth. The concept, featured in the company’s recently released video “LIVE ON THE MOON (Part 1) – UFO by BOXABL,” is based on foldable building intellectual property that would allow habitats to launch in a compact configuration and expand into larger living spaces after deployment.
The company said the concept was developed by an after-hours skunkworks engineering team and is intended to support future lunar and planetary settlement scenarios through modular, linkable structures that could be used for research, tourism and support operations. BOXABL also indicated it plans to make the UFO intellectual property available on a royalty-free basis to encourage broader innovation in off-world habitation systems, while emphasizing that the project remains separate from its core mission of advancing housing affordability and construction efficiency on Earth.
This announcement is significant because it highlights the potential crossover between terrestrial housing innovation and space exploration. BOXABL’s core technology, which allows homes to unfold on-site in under an hour, could be adapted to the extreme constraints of space travel, where volume and weight are at a premium. The concept, though early-stage, aligns with growing interest from space agencies and private companies in establishing permanent human presence on the Moon and Mars.
BOXABL’s flagship product, the Casita, is a 361 square foot studio unit with a full kitchen, bathroom, and utilities that unfolds on-site in less than an hour. The company also announced the Baby Box, a smaller 120 square foot unit built to RV code, intended for simpler, no foundation-setups. BOXABL is also developing stackable and connectable box models that can be combined to form townhomes, multifamily units, or larger single-family homes. The same folding principles could enable habitats to be packed flat for launch and then expanded once on the lunar or Martian surface.
By making the UFO intellectual property available on a royalty-free basis, BOXABL aims to accelerate development of off-world habitats by allowing other companies and researchers to build upon its ideas without licensing fees. This open approach could lead to faster innovation and standardization in space architecture, similar to how open-source software has driven progress in computing.
