Medical scholars get P186M more funding

ABOUT 648 medical scholars may be supported by the additional funding of P186 million for the Medical Scholarship Act, a senator said on Wednesday.

In a press statement, Senate Minority Leader Vicente C. Sotto III, who authored the measure, welcomed the continued funding for the program, noting it could enhance the Philippine medical workforce.

“This is really necessary because of the shortage in doctors, nurses, and medical practitioners in our country, especially in far-flung areas or provinces,” Mr. Sotto said.

Under the Republic Act No. 11509, enacted in December 2020, scholars are mandated to return service by serving in government health facilities for a year for every scholarship year availed.

“I take this very positively and support this completely, as many medical students want to finish their education but lack the financial capability to do so,” Mr. Sotto said.

He said he has envisioned supporting about 40 medical scholars for every State University and College (SUC) offering Doctor of Medicine programs.

According to the statement, there are 25 SUCs that offer medical doctor programs.

Mr. Sotto added that the additional funding also prioritizes students who are almost finished with their studies.

In 2024, Health Secretary Teodoro J. Herbosa reported the Philippines faced a shortage of 190,000 healthcare workers. — Kaela Patricia B. Gabriel
