Cancún, QRoo.- The internal survey conducted by the Employers' Confederation of the Mexican Republic (Coparmex-Cancún) showed an increase of 18% in extortion cases among members of this business chamber.
At the local level, that is, Coparmex-Cancún, it reports that the increase is between 5 and 6% in the first nine months of the year
This was announced by María Jovita Portillo Navarro, president of Coparmex-Cancún, at a press conference where she announced working groups with the Benito Juárez municipality to address this and other issues affecting the local business sector.
"There has been an increase in this crime of 18% which has manifested in extortion calls and floor rights charges; this is what is being raised and there is already a direct line with the municipal secretary of citizen security," explained the president of the employers' union.
She added that their main demand is the prompt attention to complaints, both through the Centurion Group that specializes in extortion reports, as well as through the State Attorney General's Office.
She considered it positive that the increase of up to 40 years in prison for extortion crimes has been approved at the national level, although she said that this still needs to be harmonized with state laws to become a reality in Quintana Roo.
This follows the meeting held by her and Coparmex-Cancún entrepreneurs with representatives from different areas of the Benito Juárez municipality to request five working groups on different topics such as security and business prevention; mobility and urban transport; urban development, planning and environment; tourism and urban image and destination quality.
The municipal treasurer José Alan Herrera Borges presented to the business community the progress in digitizing the process for renewing operating licenses, which, he assured, will be able to be done online starting in 2026 to streamline and reduce intermediation.
