The protocol's native cryptocurrency, HNS, is used to register, update, and transfer internet names. Handshake uses a Proof-of-Work (PoW) consensus mechanism and its coin supply decreases over time, following a decaying issuance model. The project aims to contribute to the security of the internet's infrastructure by decentralizing the root zone file of the Domain Name System (DNS), thereby democratizing the internet's naming system at its root level.
