A new bridge spanning the Mississippi River will likely be named after President Donald Trump after the full Louisiana state house approved the bill to build the bridge, which could cost as much as $3 billion, WWL radio reported Tuesday.

State Rep. Jeremy Lacombe said that they're hoping that they can get federal funding for the bridge to be built, and that naming if after Trump might help.

“We need this bridge more than anything," he said. "We need the bridge for hurricane evacuations; we need the bridge so that our people can have a way of life; we need the bridge for economic security. We need the bridge for a whole host of issues."

While Democrats voted against the bill, none of them spoke out in opposition. It passed 68-26 in the house and now heads to the senate, which is also dominated by Republicans.

The bill says that the bridge will only be named after Trump if the federal government gives the funding to build it and it is given to the state by Jan. 20, 2029, when a new president will be sworn into office.

The bill was introduced by Republican Rep. Michael Echols, who said the bridge is desperately needed to handle traffic across the capital city. He put Trump's name on it to get the president's attention.

“We’re tired of being stuck in traffic. We’re tired of not being able to move commerce, our friends and family over and across that river,” Echols said.

“This project is $3 billion to 4 billion. And we’ve been talking about it for 30 years,” Echols noted.

Over the past year, Trump has spoken with aides about erecting monuments to himself. One discussion was about putting his head on Mt. Rushmore, while another dealt with having a national holiday to celebrate Trump, Zeteo news reported last week.

Trump is currently at work on a 90,000 square-foot ballroom that aides have joked will be named after him.

Cashing In On University Patents Means Giving Up On Our Innovation Future

The post Cashing In On University Patents Means Giving Up On Our Innovation Future appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. “It’s a raid on American innovation that would deliver pennies to the Treasury while kneecapping the very engine of our economic and medical progress,” writes Pipes. Getty Images Washington is addicted to taxing success. Now, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is floating a plan to skim half the patent earnings from inventions developed at universities with federal funding. It’s being sold as a way to shore up programs like Social Security. In reality, it’s a raid on American innovation that would deliver pennies to the Treasury while kneecapping the very engine of our economic and medical progress. Yes, taxpayer dollars support early-stage research. But the real payoff comes later—in the jobs created, cures discovered, and industries launched when universities and private industry turn those discoveries into real products. By comparison, the sums at stake in patent licensing are trivial. Universities collectively earn only about $3.6 billion annually in patent income—less than the federal government spends on Social Security in a single day. Even confiscating half would barely register against a $6 trillion federal budget. And yet the damage from such a policy would be anything but trivial. The true return on taxpayer investment isn’t in licensing checks sent to Washington, but in the downstream economic activity that federally supported research unleashes. Thanks to the bipartisan Bayh-Dole Act of 1980, universities and private industry have powerful incentives to translate early-stage discoveries into real-world products. Before Bayh-Dole, the government hoarded patents from federally funded research, and fewer than 5% were ever licensed. Once universities could own and license their own inventions, innovation exploded. The result has been one of the best returns on investment in government history. Since 1996, university research has added nearly $2 trillion to U.S. industrial output, supported 6.5 million jobs, and launched more than 19,000 startups. Those companies pay…
