TLDR

  • Block is reducing staff from over 10,000 to under 6,000 employees.
  • Shares surged more than 20% in after-hours trading.

  • Dorsey said AI tools are changing how companies operate.

  • Affected staff will receive 20 weeks pay plus tenure benefits.

Block Inc. is cutting roughly 40% of its workforce as CEO Jack Dorsey accelerates a shift toward an AI-driven operating model. The decision reduces headcount from more than 10,000 employees to just under 6,000 and marks one of the largest percentage layoffs in the tech sector in recent years.

Despite the scale of the reduction, Block’s stock rose more than 20% in after-hours trading, suggesting investors responded positively to the company’s restructuring plan.

Block’s Workforce Reduction and Strategic Rationale

In a message shared publicly, Dorsey stated that artificial intelligence and “intelligence tools” are fundamentally changing how companies are built and managed. He wrote that the business remains financially strong and that gross profit continues to grow.

“We’re not making this decision because we’re in trouble,” Dorsey said, adding that something has changed in how work can be done. According to him, a smaller and flatter organization can operate more efficiently when supported by AI tools.

The company previously considered reducing its workforce by around 10%, according to earlier reports. Instead, leadership chose a larger and immediate restructuring rather than gradual cuts over several quarters.

Dorsey said a single reduction would limit prolonged uncertainty and morale damage. He acknowledged the risks involved and stated,

Affected employees will receive 20 weeks of pay plus one additional week per year of tenure. The company will also provide extended healthcare coverage and allow certain equity to vest through a specified date.

Market Reaction and Financial Context

After closing the regular session at $54.53 per share, Block’s stock climbed more than 20% in after-hours trading. Shares remain down roughly 16% over the past year, giving the company a market capitalization of approximately $31 billion.

The workforce reduction comes about one year after Block laid off more than 900 employees. The company had expanded rapidly during the pandemic period, increasing headcount from 3,835 employees in 2019 to over 10,000 before the latest cuts.

In its most recent quarterly earnings report, Block generated nearly $2 billion in Bitcoin revenue during the third quarter. Bitcoin revenue accounted for nearly one third of the company’s total revenue during that period.

The restructuring reflects broader trends in the technology sector, where companies are reassessing staffing levels as AI adoption increases. Several large firms have announced job reductions while investing heavily in automation and AI capabilities.

AI First Model and Future Direction

Dorsey described the company’s direction as becoming “smaller” and “flatter” while integrating AI across operations. He suggested that intelligence tools allow highly skilled teams to accomplish more with fewer layers of management.

Block’s chief financial officer stated that the company sees an opportunity to move faster with smaller teams that rely on automation. Leadership framed the shift as proactive rather than reactive.

Dorsey also said that many companies may reach similar conclusions within the next year. He wrote that he preferred acting decisively rather than adjusting gradually over time.

Aave DAO to Shut Down 50% of L2s While Doubling Down on GHO

Aave DAO to Shut Down 50% of L2s While Doubling Down on GHO

The post Aave DAO to Shut Down 50% of L2s While Doubling Down on GHO appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. Aave DAO is gearing up for a significant overhaul by shutting down over 50% of underperforming L2 instances. It is also restructuring its governance framework and deploying over $100 million to boost GHO. This could be a pivotal moment that propels Aave back to the forefront of on-chain lending or sparks unprecedented controversy within the DeFi community. Sponsored Sponsored ACI Proposes Shutting Down 50% of L2s The “State of the Union” report by the Aave Chan Initiative (ACI) paints a candid picture. After a turbulent period in the DeFi market and internal challenges, Aave (AAVE) now leads in key metrics: TVL, revenue, market share, and borrowing volume. Aave’s annual revenue of $130 million surpasses the combined cash reserves of its competitors. Tokenomics improvements and the AAVE token buyback program have also contributed to the ecosystem’s growth. Aave global metrics. Source: Aave However, the ACI’s report also highlights several pain points. First, regarding the Layer-2 (L2) strategy. While Aave’s L2 strategy was once a key driver of success, it is no longer fit for purpose. Over half of Aave’s instances on L2s and alt-L1s are not economically viable. Based on year-to-date data, over 86.6% of Aave’s revenue comes from the mainnet, indicating that everything else is a side quest. On this basis, ACI proposes closing underperforming networks. The DAO should invest in key networks with significant differentiators. Second, ACI is pushing for a complete overhaul of the “friendly fork” framework, as most have been unimpressive regarding TVL and revenue. In some cases, attackers have exploited them to Aave’s detriment, as seen with Spark. Sponsored Sponsored “The friendly fork model had a good intention but bad execution where the DAO was too friendly towards these forks, allowing the DAO only little upside,” the report states. Third, the instance model, once a smart…
