In an extremely short story on Deadline, the outlet’s new report says it’s confirmed when the sequel to KPop Demon Hunters will be out, and it’s a long, long time from now.
The story says that Netflix and Sony (who have no comment) are “gunning toward” a 2029 release date, which would be 3.5-4 years after the original film’s release in July 2025. An interminable wait for those hoping for another movie, but…one that probably should have been expected in the context of the animation industry.
- Production of KPop Demon Hunters was originally announced on March 8, 2021. The film was coming together for years before that, its creators say. That 2021 date to the June 20, 2025 date is a gap of four years and three and a half months.
- You can also look at another high-profile Sony animation project, the Spider-Verse movies. Into the Spider-Verse was released in December 2018, while Across the SpiderVerse was June 2023, four years and five months later. The third movie still does not even have a release date, two years after the release of the last one.

Animation takes time, and I don’t think it’s shocking that KPop Demon Hunters 2 will take almost until 2030 to get here (it may even be 2030). Rather, the question I have is what Netflix is going to try to do to capitalize on the current popularity of the movie, which continues to rack up millions and millions of views as a top-watched feature in its top 10 list, five months after release.
Netflix has just released “lyric videos” for a number of the film’s biggest songs, which comes after a “sing-along” version that hit theaters and made $24 million. There is still this odd report of a short prequel film being rated for release, but nothing at all has been said publicly about it, and it’s not 100% clear it officially exists. A live-action version of the movie has been ruled out by its creators. A TV show would probably be as much work as a movie, if not more. So, Netflix may just have to be patient and…put out a ton of KPop Demon Hunters merch, which is already the announced plan. But actual media content is another story.
It’s pretty clear that KPop Demon Hunters has had the biggest cultural impact of any media property by a mile this year. But in order to truly continue on its legacy with a full-on sequel, fans are going to have to wait a very, very long time.
