Following the Pentagon’s Thursday designation of Anthropic as a supply chain security concern, Microsoft conducted an internal assessment and determined that Claude AI tools would remain integrated across its product ecosystem for commercial users.

The controversy emerged from disagreements regarding military applications of Anthropic’s Claude AI technology. The AI company established boundaries preventing its systems from being deployed for widespread domestic monitoring operations or completely autonomous weapon systems.

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth clarified that the classification prohibits organizations holding defense contracts from engaging in commercial relationships with Anthropic.

Microsoft emerged as the initial prominent technology firm to issue a public statement on the matter. According to a company representative, internal legal teams “studied the designation” and determined that continuing to offer Anthropic’s technology to customers remains permissible.

The Claude platform will continue operating within Microsoft 365, GitHub, and Microsoft’s AI Foundry infrastructure. Defense Department applications represent the sole restriction.

Several defense technology firms have already instructed staff members to discontinue Claude usage and transition to alternative AI platforms.

The leaked communication allegedly contained Amodei’s assertion that the administration harbored negative sentiments toward Anthropic because he had refused to provide “dictator-style praise to Trump.”

Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella has been diversifying the corporation’s artificial intelligence collaborations beyond its OpenAI relationship. Last October, he emphasized the flexibility to alternate between Anthropic and OpenAI models within the Microsoft 365 Copilot platform.
