Mozambique LNG flood relief efforts intensified after the project delivered 95 tonnes of food and 100,000 hygiene kits to support victims of severe flooding.

The Mozambique LNG project, operated by TotalEnergies, delivered 95 tonnes of essential food supplies and 100,000 hygiene and sanitation kits to the Instituto Nacional de Gestão de Desastres (INGD). The contribution, valued at more than US$500,000, forms part of a broader US$3.1 million support package announced by TotalEnergies’ Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Pouyanné.

The assistance follows heavy flooding that affected several provinces across Mozambique. During the handover ceremony in Maputo, Maxime Rabilloud, TotalEnergies’ representative in Mozambique, stated that “the impact of the floods was very severe” and that the company felt it was its responsibility to join efforts with the Government of Mozambique to help alleviate the suffering of affected families and communities.

Coordinated response to urgent needs

Rabilloud added that the support delivered aims to address the most urgent needs of families and that the company intends to extend assistance through agricultural inputs, rehabilitation of selected social infrastructure and water and sanitation initiatives, to be identified jointly with the government.

Rita Almeida, Director of Planning and Cooperation at INGD, thanked the project for what she described as significant support. She noted that the contribution would reinforce operational capacity in the field and assist both families currently in temporary accommodation centres and those returning to rebuild their homes.

Resilience and climate exposure

Mozambique remains highly exposed to climate-related shocks. According to the World Bank, extreme weather events continue to affect infrastructure, agriculture and household incomes across Southern Africa. In this context, rapid coordination between public authorities and major private sector operators can play a stabilising role during humanitarian emergencies.

The Mozambique LNG flood relief initiative illustrates how large-scale energy investments can mobilise resources in support of national disaster response frameworks.

As recovery efforts continue, institutional coordination between government agencies and private operators will remain central to rebuilding livelihoods and reinforcing resilience.
